Beyond Doubt (2).jpg

Welcome to my seemingly endless journey.
A trip that will take you to places I might have visited many moons ago.
It´s a tale that came back to me when I meditated on one of my past lives. A life I told you about in my unbelievable true story.

As promised in that story I will now share this story with you.

Chapter 80

Dear Reader, Everyone belongs to the world and the world belongs to everyone!” Eleven words that may contain a truth many times greater than the proverbial lion.

Yet that world is full of walls, fences, cannons, and closed doors. She is closing down more and more, she is being slammed shut for those who have nothing.

There used to be a moment, that the world seemed to be opening up. That it was our world, our moment.

That moment faded, that world never came. With the end of the Cold War, I had a little hope, but mankind's leaders need a nice fresh war every now more than then.

"It took me a moment to calm down, I looked at him with tearful eyes. His eyes were focused on the ground, when he looked up a tear ran down his cheek. My name was Dadrie, he spoke softly and the lump in his throat came out in a stream of tears."

"To be clear this was in his tent, none of his men would have understood this, let alone seen it. That night we barely slept, and the next morning his men were proud of the bags under my eyes. In their fantasy, Reiko had kept me awake all night, what a man he must be."

"When we had made it clear who we were and the tears had provided fresh salt to the earth, Reiko was no longer Reiko. He was Dadrie again, there was a reason to be Dadrie again. That made his choice simple, Dadrie would never be a can serve in the army, or can kill for reasons other than self-protection."

"The rest was simple. We waited for the right moment, gave the men access to some extra drinks, and in the meantime performed a beautiful romantic play, which gave us plenty of time to take a break every now and then."

"And what about you guys? Did you feel betrayed by that woman you thought you knew? That shrew who now slept in the arms of the enemy." As Cabilah spoke she looked at Rech, who then turned his gaze to the ground.

“We knew nothing, at least Numico and I couldn't see anything. We heard and what we heard did not bode well,'” I said softly.

Numico continued. “But Mart continued to believe in you, at least that, no matter how illogical it seemed, you were probably the key that would free us. Even though he had doubts, he did not lose faith in you.”

Cabilah looked away for a second; “If you had done that I would have understood, if I had been you I would have hated you, you dirty traitor. But I had to make you think that. Suppose they had told you that I was Reiko's sweetheart, then you would not have responded with full understanding. We couldn't take the risk. Not even because there was always a chance of being caught. Apart from preventing negative thoughts about me, it did not achieve anything. So it wasn't worth the risk. But thank you for trusting me,” she looked at me and her voice trembled as she spoke those last words.

Retsj looked up from the ground “Sorry Cabilah.”

Cabilah stood up and walked over to the enormous forest man, wrapping her slender arm around his enormous shoulder.

“I know Retsj, I felt it. We have a special bond and I felt your anger. There have been times when I've been ready to tell you. You could see everything, but unfortunately, you were also the most closely guarded, it hurt me to feel your anger. Even though I knew it was unfair, but believe me I understand. In fact, I'm happy about it because it tells me how you feel about me. It's good to know that people care about you, especially in your own way.”

Retsj, like a schoolboy caught in his love for his teacher, looks up at Cabilah and laughs sheepishly. Then the two walk away from us arm in arm. We are left staring at the two very different backsides.

During the day we clear rubble and by mid-afternoon the house, as we call the ruin, is ready for use. She barely offers enough space for our packs and five berths, something that would have seemed impossible from the outside.

That afternoon we went to explore the area and collect food. To my surprise, there was a spring in the forest, small, deep, and full of fresh water. The first of the tribe, who chose this place as a settlement, probably had to dig for many moons. In any case, I was grateful to them.

In the evening after a royal meal, at least compared to recent times this was a feast. After dinner, Reiko started speaking: “I don't want to spoil the fun, but do you realize that we are lucky that we have not been discovered yet.”

“We are fortunate that the rain and hard ground of the mountains did not make it easy to follow our trail, but believe me they will do everything they can to capture me. I've been thinking about how we can defend ourselves, but when it comes to a fight we're so outnumbered that fighting is pointless. Unfortunately, surrender is equally pointless.”

Everyone's outlook turned gloomy, even though we all knew this deep down. It was just as if we didn't want to know at all. We were here for the first time in a false sense of security. For a little while we made ourselves believe that everything was behind us.

I know I did, as if the ocean had erased all that got us to this point.
