No or Low alcohol beer sales to soar (BBC)

  • According to a study from the Society of Independent Brewers, sales of no or low alcohol beer in the UK are up 30% since 2016.
  • This is despite total beer sales only rising 1.1% pa, a slowing from the 2.6% growth the previous year.
  • They identify 18-24 year olds as being the main demographic driving this change
  • The teetotal rate is climbing (slowly) now at 17%, so up 1% point on last year.

Analysis and Comments

  • This is part of a major trend that we are seeing in food & drink consumption – with consumers becoming more & more aware of the importance of their physical & mental health.
  • In most cases, this is not a total shift away from so called “unhealthy consumption”, this is more of a balanced position, drinking full strength alcohol sometimes, but frequently preferring the low or zero alternatives.
  • As well as alcohol consumption changes, there are also seeing similar changes in food.
  • Examples are companies such as Beyond Meat, Maple Leaf Foods & Danone

I have noticed this change. Is definitely much easier to find non-alcoholic beers. They were unheard of a few years ago but most places have them now.

Indeed ! Times are changing. Even if I am young, I am kind of scared by this new generation that seems the most anxious ever and so control-freak

Hi @vlemon

My comment has nothing to do with your post.
However, it reminded me of my time as a student at university.
I have never liked drinking alcoholic beverages. and my friends whenever we went out they gave me the car key so that I could drive, they were sure that they would be able to drink a lot of alcohol as much as they wanted because as I don't drink they would be safe and they would get home well.

@vlemon, In my opinion somewhere it's a Sign that Youth is moving towards those things which are more than just limited to Alcohol Beer. Stay blessed.

Indeed but people should also be able to choose it freely. I understand the health issue but his new world seem to be without any danger but we keep discovering new ones with our « healthy diets ». Soy, processed food are some of them

Ok, it is a good thing, but I have a small internal contradiction, I am glad that people take more care of themselves and think better when consuming food and drinks, especially that they control the intake of alcoholic beverages, but I remember that the idea of such drinks is also disinhibition and flexibility of the person.

It reminds me of the stories about the Bacchus festivals, where drinking allowed freedom from internal control and let out desires and unbridled joy. Well, excess is detrimental to health, but I understand that this liberation or de-inhibition was something socially necessary, something like the carnival issue in its old sense, where the rigid social rules and rules of social separation were subverted a bit and he gave himself a little free rein to the personal desires and the most intimate pulsations of the person.

By the way, I think I remember that at some point, in my country I heard about an advertisement for a Zero beer, which had an alcohol content of 0%, but I have some time that I have not heard of this product, I wonder if it will still be in the market.
