Unboxing Community Participation in a Web3 Social Media

We can define a social media community as a group of individuals who come together on a social media platform based on shared interests, activities, or goals. They are foremostly a user of the platform and then, converge with other users who share ideals with them. These communities can revolve around hobbies, professions, common causes, or any topic of mutual interest. Members of these communities can interact, share content, and engage in discussions related to the specific theme or subject that binds them together.

Web2 social media platforms have features like Facebook groups, Reddit subreddits, and Twitter hashtags that often serve as hubs for these communities to connect and engage. Within the web3 setting, communities can also connect and engage, but ultimately, the users own, control, and share their resources. The Hive blockchain is a web3 platform that has a social media feature with hundreds of communities thriving and growing. According to a report by @dalz, Hive Communities went live officially in February 2020. There are more than 3500 communities on Hive. Metrics for measuring community strength and growth on Hive include number of subscribers, subscribers' stake, activity counts, and active authors.

The community feature on Hive has continued to evolve over the years since its creation. Recently, [INLEO team developed the microblgging feature in its communities. that means, aside from creating long-form content, community members can also create short posts of 240 characters known as [Threads]9https://inleo.io/threads) in their respective communities. there are plans to gamify engagement metrics at the community level to foster more engagement which in turn would increase the Leo ads revenue.

A recent update by one of Hive blockchain's developer @howo talks about New communities types with features such as "everyone can comment but only members can post" and "only members can comment or post.". that is a deeper level of community engagement from the present type of anyone can post or comment.. The goal of this development is to empower community owners to fine-tune who can post or comment in a hands-off fashion. This enables them to create paid communities, enforce quality by vetting quality writers or whatever else you may find interesting! This feature would bring power into the hands of the community members and increase their ownership of their content and resources.

Think of a community that issues X NFT and only allows users who own the NFT to participate in the community. Tweaks like "If you sell the NFT you are no longer part of the community" would encourage better community participation and contribution to building rather than milking. Let's take, for instance, the Leo premium feature on INLEO. A new community can be created for only users with the premium badge to be able to enjoy incentives to encourage others to get the badge as well. This will bring a lot of gamification to the system that will help grow the Leo ecosystem, not that the project has clearly defined its trajectory and sustainability roadmap.

The new type of community would help all users to answer the question What do you bring to the community table? It is important that every user in the web3 setting with true decentralization ideals, be reminded that they have full control of their accounts and data and, as such, should not shy away from community building.

in yesterday's X Spac session with @breads, we discussed robustly on community activation and one of the key issues raised was that of rewarding community participation. The incentivization of users for participating in the community is another crucial thing to do. We have to remember that digital ownership and citizenship come with data cost for internet access as well as good gadgets with improved features. Incentivizing community participation would really help participants cover part of their costs and encourage more participation. Your mention of INLEO example is very apt.

When community participation is well incentivized and members rewarded, it would motivate them to stay and continue in the building of the community. They would be motivated to recruit, and onboard new users that will also be maintained. The Hive Zealy campaign staged by INLEO is focused on user retention. Though there is some shaking since Zealy is not decentralized, it can get better by the day.

When done in the right way, community participation incentivization can help 10x community user bases and content consumption. Still using INLEO as an example with its new post view counter that adds a layer of evergreen earning to users whose contents draw traffic to the site to increase ads view and revenue. I see community building getting better on Hive in the coming months.

I have always desired to create a community on Hive that will offer. May be I was awaiting a time as this that we have better tools that would stir effective member participation and engagement. We're getting close!

Community building on web3 is better!
