Programming Tutorials will not make you a developer.

There is really something about programming tutorials. I started my dev career with YouTube programming tutorials on specific projects and I started building along with them. They were helping at first and seemed like I was improving, but when I decided to build something without a tutorial, I could not write a line of code. I know a lot of people like this that they cannot build anything without a tutorial.

Now, what really is the problem with programming tutorials?

Some people claimed it could be because you aren't smart enough to be a dev or coding is not just for you, but that is just a fat lie if you really want to learn. The first thing is to decide that you want to learn, and then you follow the right path.

When I was in high school, I had issues with some tough subjects and it seemed like I was a dullard until they taught me how to study and absorb. That is the issue many people who learn to code are facing. People learn the wrong way.

Also, I have listened to a lot of great tutors like Brad Traversy, who mentioned that he was really suck at math and at first it seemed programming was not for him until he decided to push further and better. In this post, I will outline the process to follow to experience real growth.

Also, programming tutorials are for specific projects and the process is not to teach you but to build a project that will not take you far in your career.

Strategies for growth.

Understand the problem

  • When you want to build something, ensure you process it properly and understand what you are building. Write out everything.
  • Break down the process into a small bit
  • Convert each bit into code
  • Test your code and debug if you find any issues. Everything about programming is patience, and debugging requires patience. You will check your code line by line to know where you are having issues and there are tools and extensions you could use to debug.

You need to stop tutorials and practice with problems. There are websites with tasks that will help you to build. You may try edabit or build projects like a digital clock, expense tracker, interest calculator and to-do apps. Learn at your pace and grow your confidence.
