"First or last?

Sometimes the first move is the most important. The first set in the gym. Now you're working out. The first sentence. Now you're writing. The first call. Now you're in the game.

Other times, the last move is the most important. The last brick. Now the building is built. The last line of code. Now the app works. The last round of revisions. Now you can ship it.

What do you need to focus on right now? First or last? Do you need to start or finish?"

James Clear

I'm back with yet another killer quote by James Clear. This time the topic in point is starting and finishing things.

The way I see it is there are times in life when we need to start things and times when we need to finish them. Starting and finishing may sound like polar opposites, but the way I see it, there are many similarities between the two.

I'm very disciplined and organized, so I'm usually good at keeping habits once I create then but I have a hard time starting them to begin with. The first step is the most important but for me is also the hardest. I tend to procrastinate a lot before I can get things started and this is something I really need to work on.

Finishing is also hard. I don't like to let things go after I've been doing them for enough time. That can be good but sometimes it makes it very hard for me to make important decisions.

For example, last time I was offered a new job, it was painfully hard for me to make the decision even though the new gig was suppliantly better than the other one in every way.

The difficulty lied on the fact that I would have to finish one cycle and start another one.

Change is part of life and so are endings and beginnings. We must learn when it's time to start things and when it's time to finish them.
