“If you're stuck in a negotiation, figure out the 1 thing that is truly non-negotiable for you and then compromise on everything else.”

James Clear

I never saw myself as a salesman or someone who would engage in negotiations. In fact, for a long time, I had a very negative image of salespeople and sales in general which is a bit ironic because many people in my family and close friends are salespeople. Some are even very good at it.

However, as I progressed in my career, I realized that selling is a big part of my work, even though I'm not a salesperson.

I may not be in charge of selling the products and services that my company provides but, as a Project Manager, I constantly have to sell ideas.

I need to sell clients into accepting an idea to solve a problem that the project is facing; I need to sell my team members on the idea that we will need to work overtime in order to make our upcoming deadline and I also need to sell my boss on promoting me and giving me more money.

These negotiations are not always easy ones and especially for someone like me who only recently realized the need to be a salesperson so I find this advice very useful.

Before you enter the room to negotiate anything, take some time to think, "what is the one thing I need to get before I can leave this room?"

I am really bad at negotiating. Glad I wasn't into any career that involves selling something.

Negotiating is not an easy task. I respect those with great negotiating skills.
