This quote has a somewhat special meaning to me right now because I recently had a performance review at work. It was a good one and my boss believes I'm on track for a promotion next year which was great news.

But was not always the case. In college for example, I was a very mediocre student.

It's not that I didn't apply myself or anything like that. I'm still in touch with many of my friends from university and, even though I haven't been acting as a chemical engineer for many years, I still know more about it than most of them, some of which were top performers in engineering school.

The thing is, I was not really adapted to the obsolete grading system they used in university. Professors evaluated us based on our ability to memorize equations and frameworks to answer textbook questions, some of which had little to no real-life applicability, while I was much more interested in using creativity to solve complex real-world problems.

Because of that, I had very bad grades and I barely made it through college. I was judged by my professors, my peers and even some close friends.

Despite all that, I never changed my ways and it really paid off because when I started my professional career, things changed completely as my ability to structure and solve problems proved to be an important asset.
