“Being good at what you do is partially about competence, but not exclusively.

Two other things that matter:

Reliability. You do what you say you're going to do—on time and as expected.

Enthusiasm. You're excited to be here and eager to work on this problem.

Skills matter, but in many cases it's your reliability or attitude that separates you from the pack.”

James Clear

This is yet another very nice quote by James Clear on being good at what you do. He mentions skills as a separate thing but I think all the things he mentions are skills of some sort. The difference is some are hard skills and some are soft skills and he is right in saying that both are important.

To be honest, I'm not so sure I agree that much with the enthusiasm part but I wil give it some thought and perhaps discuss this another time.

He is dead right however when he talks about reliability. I call that being predictable and, while that term is often perceived as something bad I believe being predictable is one of the best things one can be.

As a project manager, the thing I want the most is for people to see me as someone who will deliver projects with high-quality results, on time and on budget over and over again. Being unpredictable may be good if you are a UFC fighter or a comedian, perhaps, but if you want to be known for your reliability, be the most predictable person on earth.
