“I have a friend who makes high six figures as an engineer. I once asked him his secret and he was like, “Honestly man, I just read one engineering textbook every year, which is one more book than everyone else I know reads.”

Charlie Becker

This quote is really by Charlie Becker's friend if you think about it but since he never credited the poor guy, I also can't.

On a more serious note, these are very wise words. And I don't mean necessarily that people should read more books. That is not the point to me.

I believe the central point of this quote is to always be upskilling yourself in whatever area you decided to specialize on. You can do that by reading a good book, for sure, but if reading is not for you or if the skill set you seek cannot be obtained from books, do something else. Do whatever you need to make sure you finish the year slightly better at it than when you started.

I've been on the corporate market for many years now and I can say from experience there is no shortage of stagnant professionals there. People who once were very good at their job - and some still are - but for whatever reason stopped improving themselves.

It really doesn't take much to be better than average. It can be as easy as reading one good book every year.

I think we often have this misconception that when we reach a certain point, we can stop learning or improving ourselves. Sometimes, we say it's a 'break' but it continues for months or years. People can easily get complacent and settle on doing the bare minimum. Upskilling is necessary in today's world and it can be a competitive advantage against all who don't do it.
