A Beautiful Glint of Gold!
Lately I have been hitting many of my lucky spots looking out for some good deals on silver or gold to no avail. People just aren't selling like they used to which is probably a good thing, just not great for me finding good acquisitions. I may have to go back to buying from the big boys with the big premiums online!
I wanted to share an older pickup from several years back that is stored away but had the photo amongst my other photos on my laptop. If I recall I bought this from a jeweler who I knew well before he retired. When I first saw it was in a jumble of loose silver items not even in a proper coin holder, I had to rescue it. The jeweler didn't deal in coins at all just metals at spot and he gave me a great deal on it. I definitely paid less than it was worth at the time.
In 1839 the mint changed the design of the $5 gold coin, and the new obverse was designed by Christian Gobrecht who became the third chief engraver of the US mint. An interesting factoid about him is that his mother's family trace back to 1642 Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts, some of the first European settlers in what is now the northern US. He was a prolific engraver and inventor before becoming chief engraver. He held this position from 1840 until his death in 1844. The reverse remained the same eagle design by John Reich except the 5 D. was changed to FIVE D. This design remained in use until 1908.
About the coin:
Mint: Philadelphia
Composition: 90% gold/ 10% copper
Weight: 8.359 grams (0.242 Troy Ounces of gold)
Diameter: 21.6 mm
Population: 2,030,895
Design: Obverse by Christian Gobrecht and Reverse by John Reich.
I really love early American coin designs, just timeless beauty. These coins are relatively easy to find in descent condition and great to collect, but they can be rather expensive especially with today's gold prices. They are always a great addition to any collection if you get the chance! Feel free to ask any questions or add comments below. Keep on stacking and have a great weekend!
And my disclaimer: Gold and silver stacking can be a fun hobby but isn't for everyone. You can lose money. I'm not a financial advisor and this isn't financial advice, please always do your own research before spending your hard earned money.

That’s a nice save there. Not in bad condition, but it looks like it’s been cleaned to me in the photos.
I wouldn't doubt it, it's not a great candidate for grading.
Beautiful coin!! I have only one of those.
I love them, such beautiful coins!
If I'm correct about the Special Deals the U.S. Treasury will be offering, you'll be able to Exchange your $5 Gold Coin for a 1/4 ounce Gold Coin with a $25 Face Value, that will have the Spending Power of 2,500 of today's Fiat USD's... I'm not sure what you paid, but I think you got a better deal than you thought...
I don't even remember what I paid, it was basically spot over ten years ago.
Awesome find my friend, you don't find gold coins like this loose in a pile of coins!!😀
Excellent condition as well, classic US gold coinage!!!😀
Thanks! I hope to come across something even better someday

That's a beauty, I really want to score a circulation gold coin in my collection, I'll get one eventually
This was sheer luck, mostly he had gold necklaces, rings, some gold bullion items and one old coin! Too bad he retired, I loved that shop!
