AI can create realistic fake IDs

Fake identificaion documents have probably been around as long as identification documents have. There have always been bad actors at play, and it would seem that Artificial Intelligence is making the job of creating realistic identifications documents even easier.

Rather than meticulously and painstakingly crafting a fake ID by hand or with using a combination of photoshopping tools (a highly skilled and lucrative criminal profession that can take years to master) you can now generate fake IDs in a matter of minutes from the OnlyFake site.

AI putting criminals out of business

Yes, these poor guys that made a living making forgeries are being put out of business. AI is taking their jobs over. How sad is that .... not!

I would not be surprised if there is a spurt growth in high art forgeries in the not too distant future.

What do you think?

To show how easy it all is,investigative journalist Joseph Cox of 404 Media used a site called OnlyFake to create very realistic images of fake IDs, which he then used to create an account on a common crypto exchange.

OnlyFake

OnlyFake is an underground website that claims it uses “neural networks” to generate realistic looking photos of fake IDs for just $15. The method has been disputed by some University professors but the bottom line is that the site is shaking up the marketplace for fake identities. Not to mention shaking up cybersecurity more generally.

404 Media in their article proved that the technology works and that the fake IDs are generated almost instantly.

Somewhat worryingly this could streamline more financial fraud.

What was tested and created

During the tests, the journalist created a California driver's license.
This had all the required information which included

  • arbitrary name
  • biographical information
  • address
  • expiration date
  • signature we wanted.
It is convincing, and the photo even has the ID card lying on a fluffy carpet.

Many sites as you know as part of their KYC process require you to take pictures of photo ID, so this came as if someone had put on the carpet in order to take a picture for KYC purposes.

They then created another fake ID, and it was this fake ID that was used to successfully pass the identity verification process on OKX.

OKX themselves have been in the news recently. They are commonly used by criminals or at least it would appear so by the amount of times the Cryptocurrency has appeared in court doceumentation!

How it works

The user enters a name and biographical data, uploads a photo (or chooses one from OnlyFake’s archives), and selects an AI-generated signature.

Within minutes, OnlyFake generates images of the fake ID’s front and back, which users can attempt to upload to any website that requires ID verification.

Yes it really is that fast!

Other documents

OnlyFake claims it can make upto twenty thousand documents a day which includes many hundreds at the same time using an Excel table.

They have countless templates for passports and licenses etc.

404 Media did contact many Centralized Exchanges for their responses, some of which were quite surprising.

Companies having to stay ahead of the fraudsters

Just like any crimewave companies and institutions must now stay one step ahead of the AI generated fake IDs.

I am guess AI will be used to combat AI.

Let's see what happens!

Okex has a super easy KYC process, that should be the reason this worked.

That said, this can easily be made useless if every system adopts video recording as part of it's KYC procedures.

funny one, 'using AI yo combat AI'. Not surprised when I see this massive fraudulent activities, that's what happens when tech fall to the wrong hands. Exchanges really need to be on the alert.
