Time To Push For Leoshorts

We were told what the plan is.

As of now, the idea of video that can uploaded through Leo is on the back burner. The decision was clearly stated that the development resources would be focused elsewhere. It was emphasized that the need did not appear to be there from the community.

Here is where we have to take matters in our own hands.

Many have talked about how it would be good to add this. However, like most things, talk is cheap. Personally, I can't take a hard stand against the view espoused by @khaleelkazi. Too often this community has said that Leo needed something; that life could not go on without it.

However, when it was introduced, the interest lasted about 2 days.

That said, we can make the case to have it moved up the development list. We just have to work around it and make sure it is a valid concept.

How To Add Leoshorts (or shorts on Leo)

For this reason, I started to play around with adding some shorts using the tag #leoshorts. In this article I will go through how I do it.

This is a step-by-step guide as to how to do it.

Set up a repository

Since Leo doesn't allow the upload of videos, we have to use something else. While there could be many options, we will cover the two primary.

3Speak

To do this, I would suggest using an alt account to upload. The idea is to upload a number of times throughout the day.

Step 1: Upload short video
Step 2: Put some generic info in title and summary box
Step 3: Decline rewards
Step 4: Basic tags (do not use Leo or anything related to Leo)
Step 5: Wait for video to be published

Rewards are declined because we are using this as a repository for our videos. 3Speak is just our "server".

YouTube

As an alternate, you can use YouTube as your repository. The means uploading the video to your account there. Keep in mind, this is putting the content in the hands of Google. I prefer 3Speak so I know it is not a part of Web 2.0.

Thread the Short Video

A short is nothing more than a thread.

3Speak

Step 1: Open InLeo.io
Step 2: In thread box, enter title.
Step 3: Enter tags. Make sure one of them is #leoshorts
Step 4: Hit thread
Step 5: Edit thread when it appears
Step 6: Embed code from 3Speak video (located at the bottom of the share on the video)
Step 7: Hit the thread button again

The reason for this is because the 3Speak web address appears in threads as a link. It does not embed the video. Hence, we have to edit the thread and embed the video. This can be done when make the thread, but, as of now, it will not appear on the latest page. It will be entered in your profile page.

Also note editing along with embedding requires Leo Premium. This is another use case for the membership. We also have to note that embedding the video through the edit means it could take up to 5 minutes to show up.

YouTube

YouTube is a bit easier.

Step 1: Open Inleo.io
Step 2: In thread box, enter title
Step 3: Enter tags. Again make sure #leoshorts is one of them
Step 4: Post the share link from YT video
Step 5: Hit thread

Here is what the Leoshort video looks like:

https://inleo.io/threads/view/taskmaster4450le/re-leothreads-n7csuyew

Now we have shorts resident on Leo threads. To see them, simply click on the leoshorts tag and it will bring up the page.

Make The Push

There are a couple of things in play here.

Personally, I feel that Leo needs a lot more video content. This is speaking in general and not necessarily user generated. Embedding YouTube and other videos is a great way to grow the library. Video is the most popular form of media engagement, something we should take advantage of.

My view is we need 1 million hours of video content on Leo. That might seem like a lot until we consider this:

Around 3.7m new videos are uploaded to YouTube every day – that’s around 271,330 hours of video content based on an average length of 4.4 minutes.

Source

Basically, we are looking at 4 days of YouTube content.

Of course, Leoshorts can play into this. By embedding this in, we can not only add to the total but also show the Leo team that shorts is something that will be utilized.

This cannot be something that is abandoned after a few days. People need to consistently post a few each day. Over time this will start to add up.

I would say the goal to get some attention is to being with 30 per day (in total). This would give us a monthly total of around 900.

The best thing is it can be any topic. Also, if going the 3Speak route, by using a second account, can upload many throughout the day, and then thread them out.

So let's have some fun and see if we can't push the Leo team to incorporate this in the UI. A few months of sustained shorts on Leo should do it.

Support Each Other

One of the keys is to support each other in this. When you see a short, give it a click to watch. That will help it especially if it is on 3Speak.

Also, rethread any shorts that you see. Give that person some attention while also promoting the initiative. Consider what this could look like with 100 people doing it daily.

Is there any concern with people essentially getting upvotes/paid for video content that isn't their own creation?

The upload to 3Speak should be their creation. There is it considered a blog post and why I suggested to decline the rewards.

But embedding a video in a thread is no different than posting a video or image in a comment.

I guess I don't really know what kind of upvotes people are getting in threads, but I could see some potential copyright issues if people start making significant money from posting other people's videos. At what point does it go from sharing to replicating for commercial use...?

They are about in line with comments. Most get nothing, or next to nothing regardless of what it is. Polls, videos, memes, they tend to all have the same fate: timing when someone comes by and sees it.

Since most are voting with low amounts, and also low percentages, the totals end up not adding up to much. With HP, there is also the dust level that has to be hit.

Ah gotcha! That all makes sense... I know some brands like Disney and Nintendo can be a bit over the top when it comes to copyright, and have people searching the internet for potential infringement... but there is always the economics of it, so probably wouldn't act to make back cents/dust.

It is always an interesting issue and going to get cloudier as time goes by.

Look at Google (YouTube). That was build on people uploading copyrighted data (which is much different than embedding).

When not hosting the content, it is a much different story.

I think YouTube has possibly swung too far in the other direction, where there are now entire companies who deliver copyright strikes on behalf of their clients and YouTube takes the video (or the monetization) away from the poster immediately... and the poster has to appeal and fight with YouTube to get it reinstated. It's become a massive problem and a huge weapon against creators.

Totally agree that there is a huge difference between hosting and embedding, but I'm sure arguments can be made that if users are making money off the videos of others, then they could be sued for copyright breaches... but given the amount of money at play at this stage I'm confident its a non-event.

I think YouTube has possibly swung too far in the other direction,

Maybe. Google is a strange bird. I wonder if it is copyright they are concerned about. They seem to go on a furry against whatever suits them at that moment and crush all they see.

They did it to crypto a number of years ago.

given the amount of money at play at this stage I'm confident its a non-event.

I think we can be highly confident of this. The legal fees would far outpace what the payouts are in total. I dont think it is worth the fight over a few bucks here and there.

yes i did ; ;. you said the demand did not appear but thats the issue. we want to onboard new users having it will get more users no? why only look at our current community. I think that's a mistake. There's reasons why millions are on tikok and youtube shorts. doesnt make sense if inleo wants to be a social media powerhouse that it doesn't have its own short video added to it's portfolio

Awesome, it will be great to have more ready to use video upload options on Hive and Leo specifically, since video is the current main medium.

It is nice that you are rallying the users, and sharing a guide on how to go about it. I am curious why video use didn't pick up. From an earning perspective, I though they can get votes from the 3speak video, as well as the Leo post.

That is a nice feature you have created. I've not been doing video content for my posts in quite sometime because youtube was the easiest way and as you mentioned they are under the control of evil Google. I have considered using 3Speak, but just haven't needed videos as of late. Thanks for your hard work on that, it gives us a way to use video on Leo, at least until they decide to add a formal feature at some point.

It is a work around. If we are successful with it, we can push the development team to built it into the UI.

Thanks for the guide Task! We're going to start making shorts from the AMA and I will join you in posting them on Threads 🦁

Let's see if more people jump in

That is great. The more we can get going, the better. I just step up my phone and did a test short to see how it works. It went without a hitch.

This can be massive. We need a ton more video content on Leo.

This is a great guide to embed videos on InLeo using 3speak as the server.

The embed link from 3speak works smoothly for me on threads without me having to edit it. I have tried it with one of my videos.

With this people will see the reason to subscribe to premium in order not to miss out on earning some LEO tokens.

It's a start and I agree that this part depends on us in boosting #leoshorts.

It's actually much easier on YouTube and I confess that I'm more familiar with it than with 3Speak, as I haven't even been able to synchronize my Hive account there yet, but whatever.

It's good to see that we will have another tag to play with and have fun with. May more people join this cause and as I always say, everyone benefits from it.

Videos help people become more interested in any platform and through #leoshorts, things can get better for us.
