The Decentralization of Hollywood

This is something that is really starting to fascinate me. Hollywood is following most other media trends. There is a major shift taking place, one that is seismic.

To start, the Hollywood movie star is dead. There was a time when these people were elevated to a cult-like status. Before the Internet, there were drips of information. Nevertheless, we had a clear separation between the stars and fans. This added an air of mystery.

People like Sean Connery were archetypes that were able to keep their personas. The distance was further enhanced by the promotion of their films/shows.

At the same time, the studios took the time to nurture their images. With so few options, the A-list celebrities were cultivated. This went on for decades.

Perhaps social media was at the root of the change. If so, the mystique was lost. Outside of people like Tom Cruise, who are the major stars of today? While the ones in the past could put up a flop, these were people you tended to count on for a blockbuster.

Names like Costner, Hanks, Willis, Moore, and Arnold would get it done. Notice how none of these are young.

This only adds to the decline.

Decentralized Media

The simple fact appears to be we are entering an era where decentralization is taking hold. In part articles we detailed out political and sports commentators have other options. No longer is the only choice a major media company.

Consider the idea of podcasting. It is the one realm where anyone can get into. The ability to record a podcast and upload it is pretty straightforward. Here we see a major difference from decades ago.

Those who go a bit further are able to start "production" companies. This might not be on the scale of the major companies but still is quality enough for the masses. This means "shows" can be produced.

At the end of the day, it is all about attention. Every minute that is spent on YouTube or Spotify watching/listening to something made by an individual is time away from the major media houses. Here is where the distribution of money is going to enter.

If viewership falls off, like it has with cable news, this eats into the advertising dollars. When a group of fans can get together and provide better insight into their NFL team as compared to the likes of ESPN, this can severely impact their business model.

Of course, we now have Web 3.0 looking to take this to another level.

Full Length Films

What is getting interesting is the concept of artificial intellgience. How is this going to affect things?

Right now there is a writers strike in Hollywood. One of the beefs is how they are going to handle the impact of AI and the money generated. The studios, of course, want it all for themselves. On its end, the union feels that the writers should be compensated for the work lost.

What is overlooked in all of this is the fact that technology can be used by anyone. Hence, it might not be a battle between just these two sides. Will there come a time where a full length film is created by independent "studios" simply by using a computer and advanced software?

Again, even if it doesn't become the biggest, each 90 minutes spent watching a film of this nature comes at the expense of the major studios.

Reverting back to the movie star, without the likes of Cary Grant, what is the draw? As technology advances, the barrier to entry is reduced. This means we are likely to see more produced since software is going to keep advancing at a tremendous pace.

As we finish out 2023, it would not surprise me to see a push in this direction. We are already seeing it in different fields. If the software keeps going at the pace of ChatGPT and the others, we could see full length scripts written by computers in the near future. With txt-to-video, that could then be fed in and, presto, full length film.

This is going to get very interesting especially if people start to understand how tokenization and Web 3.0 can aid in this process.

All media and broadcasting is going to come under attack. The impact of YouTube was strong but I have a feeling that was just the primer. We are going to see the major impact coming throughout this decade.

Do not be surprised if Hollywood loses a lot of its status.

That movie made from a room with AI and editing programs by an individual will come true in the next three years at most.

Very soon, movie producers will not employ writers to write their stories or movies for them anymore. They will begin to make use of Artifical Intelligence and it will render a lot of people jobless

It's certainly interesting to watch from afar. I don't watch movies or pay to go see them in theatres, so I'm not their target audience, but clearly there is no originality left in any of the big production studios, and indie filmmakers are all the rage these days.
