The Stress-Economy Connection

avatar

Stress is a natural response that we all have when our environment starts becoming challenging or threatening. We instinctively react to the changes and their potential effects on us. This in itself is beneficial when we have a good dose of it(stress). Because it moves us to take action and modify course.

The economy is in a constant influx and outflux. The speed at which this happens varies on multiple factors. To many people, the economy is currently out of shape. More like shrinking in shape. Recession has being a trending term in the past twelve months and one of the accepted views is that we're either heading towards it or we're already in it. Which is which?

Stress And The Economy

There's isn't strictly any connection with stress and the economy other than the observation that economic downturn increases the stress levels of people. And this could further tank the economy.

We can tell that when people are stressed, their productivity at work drops. This can lead to a decrease in economic output from the businesses that these people work at. Assuming that this continues, less economic activity will be generated from the business further reducing the inflow and outflow of capital.

Outside of business, people who are stressed about their finances may shop less or buy cheaper products to save money for the foreseeable future. And with inflation out of the proverbial box, saving money is another financial challenge.

On the other way round, when there's economic growth and activity in plenty. People and businesses have more resources and opportunities at their disposal. And the level of stress drops considerably during that time. I don't want to say that our stress levels is dependent on the economic condition we're living in but it does feel that way. Maybe there's a connection after all.

Behavioral Change

Our buying and selling behavior is influenced by our stress levels and the economic conditions.

Apart from reducing our buying activity, we also withdraw and become passive in response to stress. I wear my doom and gloom hat whenever I visit the market and hear all the stories revolving around the topic of price increase.

This changes my perception, also influencing my decision-making process. After hearing their stories, I dare not negotiate on the price of an item lest they jump on me. Now, I'm less motivated to process information and evaluate other alternatives when it comes to the price of an item.

Another interesting part is how it affects our satisfaction and loyalty. We tend to have lower expectations and a high tolerance for dissatisfaction in stressful times. We simply put up with it.

We may also be more sensitive to feedback and complaints, and less likely to repeat purchase or recommend products and services.

In Closing

People behave more irrationally under stress. And when it comes to finances, its implications can be manifold.

It sounds simple enough to just breathe and think clearly in order to not make things worse. But already being off balance prevents that. Are we in a recession?

A bad economy can increase one's stress level. That's why we need to find a balance and stick to the plan.

Right, having a plan during these times is important. Finding a balance is a bit hard but I think it's possible when we put much effort into it.

Recession is being thrown around a lot lately so I can't tell whether we are in it or not but I do know the economy does influence stress levels a great deal.

I can relate to the will for price negotiation droping when sellers begins to tell how much the cost of things have gone up. I just pay and work away with more stress about ways to earn more money.

I think we're not yet in it. Things do not look that bad to me. Many people are still able to get things done from a financial perspective.

Yes, I think it's a great deal too. Although we usually don't pay much attention to it. People are stressed out about the economy so much so that it's the main thought they carry in their minds on the background. I'm not sure it's a tactic from the sellers or not but I just pay the full price of an item. That way I at least not increase their stress levels more.

This isn't a school boy topic, yet, you dealt with it nicely and gave so much clarity to the discussion. Surely, there isn't any direct connection between stress and the economy, as far as textbooks are concerned. But, on a boarder scale, everything can be traced back to consumer behavior.

The economy is experiencing a meltdown. The ripple effect of all these is hitting the economy really hard and even the Central Banks are running out of ideas. I think a great deal of practical knowledge of personal finance is very important in moments like this.

Nice reading from you, bro.

I wonder if you are on Twitter... Can you send the URL of your Twitter profile? We (DreemPort) need it for a list we are compiling for all Dreemers.

Yes, On a broader scale everything seems to be connected and interdependent. I think it is one of the reasons why the ripple effect on the economic downturn is affecting other areas of life such as our mental sanity. That's what worries me sometimes, there doesn't seem to be any practical solutions from the authorities in charge other than let's watch and see how this plays out.

I don't have a Twitter account currently, stopped using the platform a few years ago.

You have just said it all! It connects to everything almost! The economy alone is nothing to write about with promises of the government for a better and sustainable living. How can one not be stressed?? Mentally, Physically, Emotionally and Financially! I think you should have a continuation of this post on how to manage stress!♡♡
I am a #dreemer for life and I came across this post through Dreemport.

Indeed! They only make false promises with no clue at what they're doing. The problem is probably bigger than their capabilities. For me, mental/emotional is the most stressful part. I'll think about writing how to manage stress. Thanks for the feedback #dreemer and also for stopping by :)

Yes, the bills piling up wouldn't allow the stress to calm down lol. I think that's the goal, finding ways to go above it so that the stress can be reduced considerably. With stress constantly disturbing us, we can't do much of what needs to be done.
Thanks for stopping by from #dreemport :)
