Social Media And The Art Of FOMO

avatar

When we disconstruct the acronym FOMO, we have Fear and Missing Out. Missing Out implies regret in the future while Fear could mean making a mistake in the present.

When the marketplace is crowded with buyers, sellers will sell all their products and then some. Buyers will have to part ways with their money even if it might not be the right time to make a purchase. A transaction happens when the perceived value that is received is seen to be greater than the actual value that is given out. During times of FOMO, we subconsciously judge that the transaction is right and we make the purchase.

In investing, the same thing happens more or less. But with a twist. Unlike a purchase of a product or service in which the benefits can be instantaneous. The benefits with investing in a certain investment are not immediate, they only come later or not.

Perception Vs Reality

FOMO as in fear of missing out is a term that refers to the feeling of anxiety or unease that pops up from the belief that others might be experiencing something exciting or important while one is not present or involved.

The art is basically in the tactics deployed to create a sense of urgency in people that influences 1them to partake in a particular event or experience. FOMO can be seen as a tactic that plays on human psychology. The human mind hardly acts logically, emotions always overrule judgement.

On social media, FOMO is always present. It is what drives engagement and sales for businesses. Social proof through celebrity endorsements, live updates, exclusive or limited time offers, etc. This is all well and good for the business because they're in the job of making money.

But, on an individual level, it can get overloaded and shape our perception into believing that we're constantly missing out and compared to those involved, our life sucks.

My first taste of it was when I had the impression that I need to be part of every experience otherwise I'll miss out on something that's important. I was chasing this elusive goal that never seems to materialise. Perhaps, it didn't aligned with my reality or it wasn't clearly defined.

The reality was that I don't need to be part of every experience. It was quite impossible in the first place. And I figured that it was more than okay to miss out on many of them because they weren't for me. So I changed my focus into picking a few experiences that we're of genuine interest to me and focus on them.

A Short Analogy

There's a super big table with all kinds of food delicacies that you can imagine placed on it. The catch is that your eyes can feast on all the plates and consume all the food in your mind but when you come to the table you can only pick two plates, one on each hand.

Social media is the table and FOMO is all the food delicacies that you frankly can't really eat all even though you may want to eat them all.

Everyone who invested any money into meme coin did so because of pressure and because of FOMO fomo is majorly being sold through the social media.

Rightly said! There's hardly any other reason to invest in a meme coin. But when we see it everywhere and people at all angles seem to be investing in it. Then reason is no longer needed we tell ourselves. Social media is indeed the main outlet where we come in contact with FOMO and many of us aren't expert in filtering it out.

This is because, social media let's us go full in and makes it difficult to filter anything. People focus on the FOMO when it's almost impossible not to focus on it .

Lol yes, it's like it has become part of the fabric of social media. We have to learn to create our own filters or get swayed by it(FOMO) constantly. I don't think abandoning social media altogether is a possibility but limiting one's usage of it could also help.

Social media is an excellent catalyst for FOMO, it is so vital if one isn't rooted in what they seek and want, the FOMO driven by social media can easily sway anyone to get involved in the next hype.
We have to cultivate the habit of shutting our eyes off those that are too shiny to be true and approach some with caution.

You touched on a good point about having personal structure. I think it's the best way to not be sway by FOMO sweeping through social media.
Right! Nothing that glitters is gold. Too much glamour on social media. Caution is necessary.

Heheh.. I actually believe with you that FOMO creates a kind of urgency in one's mind and makes you rush into making some decisions even without much thoughts

Great analogy.... Classic actually.
I'll pick 4 plates though with the rate of hunger in my body now😂😂

Lol, yes. That's the basis of it. We make decisions without giving them much thought because of the pressure of potentially missing out.

Haha, no way! Two can feed you well and take away the hunger 😂😂😂😂

You are right about Fomo's presence on the internet. This is why many don't want to go into Crypto.

Crypto is like the highest peak in the mountain of FOMO. The fact that money is involved makes it harder for most people.

Yes, it does. Ponzi schemes leave people in the middle. They are not sure if Crypto isn't another scheme.

Right. They only see that aspect of crypto and think it is everything.

FOMO may have its advantages but it's often time bothered on peer pressure and thus prevent rational thinking and weighing of the pros and cons. It's typical for humans to launch into something they can't see because of stories like Bitcoin. Rather muddy, isn't it?

Absolutely! We're looking for the next bitcoin without doing any proper research. When it gets overloaded, FOMO tends to have more demerits than merits and most of just don't know how to keep it from being overloaded.

I also happen to believe that this fear fosters getting into things without proper research. The world is evolving. Social media is now a great way to build one's portfolio and many of us have begun to see that. This fear inadvertently makes us to take on decisions that may be disastrous in the long run. I'm speaking from experience of course...

You clearly understand the heart of the matter, social media is great for exposure but we sometimes end up drifting with the currents of FOMO that we forget the big picture or what's important. I've made many of this mistake and wasted time and effort.

Always a pleasure. I am curious by the way. Is Takhar your real name? You don't have to tell me your real name on here but you can just say yes or no if you want to remain anonymous...hehe. I am just curious...

Ah, it depends on what real name means. If you're referring to the name my parents gave me when I was born, then Takhar wasn't the name they gave me.
May I ask what prompted the curiosity?

FOMO is a feeling that people experience about missing out on something that they think is important.

For example, your friend has a nice party that's happening in a few days time. You're not planning on going because you probably have something more important to do. But your other friends keep telling you how fun, great, eventful the party will be. Which makes you decide that you will go because you don't want to miss out on all the fun things that will be happening at the party.
