Playing It Safe Is Riskier

avatar

A long time ago, on a distant land that was surrounded by a large body of water on all sides, a storm started to form on the sea and it could could be seen by all inhabitants when standing on the shore.

Frightening dark clouds that seem even darker during twilight. The wise among them held a round table meeting to decide the course of action in regards to the fast approaching storm.

For some, building a comfortable bunker beneath their homes was the way to weather the storm. No matter how dark the clouds may be, they say, it will only brush through them and go on its way like previous storms.

A few others disagreed, stating that the impact of the storm shouldn't be underestimated. Safely hiding beneath their homes might be a one way street to nowhere. Rather, they should build a fleet and explore unchartered lands.

As the discussion continued both parties where reluctant to understand the other's viewpoint, so the divide began and each party wished well for the other party. While the fleet builders were building, the bunker folks were also working on creating their bunkers for the storm ahead.

When the storm finally approached, the fleet and its boarders were on their way towards uncharted lands while those that stayed behind were safely tucked in their bunkers.

Amidst the heavy downpour, the ground quaked and the cracks were quickly filled with water that gradually submerged the island soon after the storm had passed.

Safe Until It Isn't Safe Anymore

During times of uncertainty, we normally default into choosing the path of least resistance. Since we do not know what will happen next, we find comfort in picking the seemingly safe option and watch things unfold.

But as many of us have found out, it's often too late to change course from that position when things start unfolding. And we realise we're in a sort of a cage.

Of course, by all means. Safety is important. But in my opinion, it shouldn't be the sole determinator when we make decisions as we will end up losing more than we gain just to be safe. From personal experience, anytime I choose to play it safe I lose big time.

My intuition sometimes tell me that with change being constant, safety is a temporary way to soften or stop the tides of change. Eventually, change will sweep it away. So anything that is safe could be one or two changes away from not being safe anymore.

A 9 to 5 job is safe until high inflation happens and the good pay isn't enough anymore to cover the cost of living.

Growth, Evolution And Adaptability

Perhaps, one of the reasons why the dinosaurs became extinct after the giant asteroid hit the Earth was because they tried to play it safe instead of exploring foreign territory.

Playing is safe is mostly instinctive, we're not keen on venturing into the unknown. To some, the unknown is unknown and should be left that way. This stems from the view that everything bad comes from the unknown. Which is true, but so also is everything good.

Growth, as in evolution, happens at the intersection between the known and the unknown. Playing it safe is like resisting the irresistible change. It only works temporarily. Might as well roll the dice, override our instincts and explore the edge. It really isn't always bad.

It's always better to get it all checked off rather than doing it bit by bit. Everything checked may come out good or a big loss may follow suit, but for me I like it just once.

It's really good that way, doing it once and done with it. I feel like doing it bit by bit increases takes more effort that could be put to use somewhere else and the chances of everything going wrong in a big way.

I loved the simple illustration you used, life is all about risk and we shouldn't be rigid with our decisions at time.

Indeed. Making rigid decisions could cost us more in the future. Safety shouldn't always be the main priority.

Very captivating illustration. I think he's got a poetry skill up his sleeve which he throws at us now and then.

Are you aware that you have a talent for poetry? I think you do I pick that up in your articles. That was an interesting story for a second it seem like I was reading some cool story I wished continued for much longer.

Trying to play it safe in most cases has often ended up making us to be comfortable and not push or take some risk and the consequence of that is no growth with a chance of losing more.

Thank you, it could spin off into how the storm destroyed those that stayed or the journey of the fleet to uncharted lands. I think I'm naturally good at it. But the thing is that it's something that I'm not very well interested in currently. I've always wanted to be in the movie game and tell captivating stories with great messages behind them. Perhaps sometime in the future.

Yes, we eventually get too comfortable when we play it safe. This could have been an opportunity for growth but we somehow try to delay it and in sometimes doesn't end well for us.

Thank you for the beautiful piece, perhaps a venture into the unknown with caution will help more than the instimctive scuttle for safety

Exactly, caution is necessary but we also have to take action and go outside of our comfort zone. That's where the fun happens!

Excellent piece. It's good to look before you leap but if you look and see nothing take a leap of faith! Keep up the good work!

Yes yes, the leap of faith is the way out when there seems nothing to see ahead.

One always faces that fear. I am at that stage of my life where I am faced with a decision to either leave my comfort zone or play it safe. Playing it safe is not an option in my case. In fact, when it comes to safety, taking a chance outside is the safest option. This was a beautiful read as always.

Indeed! I think that playing it safe not being an option is a good thing. Rolling the dice out of your comfort will indeed be the safest option now and in the long run. I pray everything works out well for you :)
And thanks for stopping by as always :)

Sometimes, it feels better to leave the unknown as it it but living a life full of regrets is one of the worst things that could happen to a person. As humans, we have the liberty to test the waters and as such, one shouldn't limit their options incase of the rainy day.

This was beautifully written ✨

Yes, the fact that we have the freedom to choose to explore should be used rather than trying to default on our instincts of prioritizing safety only. Everything good happens at the outside of our comfort zone(half truth).
Thank you!

Rightly said takhar. One always has to reach outside their comfort zone.

You're most welcome :)

You're really very good bro... I for once wished this write-up never ended.

Yes, I really think it's all about shifting the time the irresistible will come in view when we play it safe, it's actually safer to come out all in sometimes but then again, the question of uncertainty hits us... What if we lose them all also.

Life itself has no formula anyway 😂

Thank you so much bro, If I made it long it will be hard to read lol.

Yes, that's the trick. It could always go either way. Nothing is guaranteed so we might as well explore and go all in.

That's the good and bad aspects of life. Good in a sense that we can create our own formula and succeed at it and bad in a sense that we can mess up big big time!

Thanks for stopping by from #dreemport :)

This is nicely written bro. Life is full of risk however, it takes determination for one to overcome lots of uncertainties
I love how you approached this topic
Good job 👍

Thank you!
Uncertainty is part and parcel of life. Trying to play it safe is mostly counterproductive in most cases. Better to explore it with a leap of faith towards the unknown.

As someone who has been playing it safe over-and-over for more than 20 years, I can say I started notice what this story teaches us. Maybe I should take risks more.

But... How do you deal with that fear? I can't move forward nor go back...

Really?? Then perhaps, you should start taking more risks.

Overcome the fear is really the hard part because it is instinctive in nature. I think taking small steps out of your comfort zone and gradually increasing to big steps as you gain more confidence and develop will power could be the way to overcome it. It's really not that bad out there :)

Thanks for the tips and stopping by again :)
