IF It's Worth Doing, THEN It's Worth Doing Well

avatar

Every now and then, we find something that's really worth doing. It could be an opportunity to level up our skills like becoming a better communicator or something seemingly simple like cooking a great meal at a family gathering.

But we oftentimes end up under delivering on the task with mediocre results. I just experienced one recently and I'm still wondering why I did that.

In a nutshell, the phrase on the title encourages us to put our full effort into any endeavor that we choose to pursue, that if a task is deemed important enough to be undertaken, it should be executed to the best of our ability.

I've noticed countless times already that the quality of the results achieved is usually directly proportional to the amount of effort and attention that one puts into the task at hand.

For example, a student's half-hearted work on doing an assignment will more than likely result in a poor grade.

Why Do Something That's Worth Doing Half-heartedly?

I think there's no one answer for it. It could be a number of reasons. In my case, I was simply unprepared but looking back, it's a lame excuse because I should have come prepared since it was worth it.

Other possible reasons are a lack of motivation, confidence, focus, or not enough interest on the task at hand. Despite it worth doing, the pull to not do a great work is always greater than the push to do a great work. Hence, mediocre results.

However, there's superiority in doing great work and we ought to strive to do it(great work) even on days we may not feel like doing it. For one, doing something well leads to greater success, which means a potentially bigger reward. And a sense of satisfaction in the outcome.

While half-heartedly work is more likely to lead to unwelcomed consequences and a sense of dissatisfaction. It could also be a waste of time and energy.

The concept can be applied to many aspects of life, including work, relationships, and personal pursuits. And for me, It's a reminder to take pride and put ourselves into what we do, approaching every task with a positive attitude, and to strive for excellence in everything we undertake.

Yes, it sounds a bit idealistic because there will be many times in which positivity and the desire to strive for excellence will be on vacation. However, the alternative of winging it doesn't seem realistic in my opinion.

Conclusion

When all is said and done, I believe that if something is worth doing, it is worth doing well because the effort we put in will pay off handsomely in the long run.

Whether that be through personal growth, professional success, or simply a sense of pride in a job well done like cooking a great meal at a family gathering.

Sometimes, the fact that things are worth doing isn't even enough motivation enough to do them well. Sometimes feeling that one might fail even after they do something well is also another factor.

Indeed. Sometimes will power is needed to get it done while temporarily silencing the distractions or doubts coming from the mind. On the flip side, it's the fear of failure that often leads us into doing spectacular works.

Lol doesn’t this kill your motivation almost instantly? I feel like this will not only deter you from doing your best, but doing ANYTHING at all. Being afraid of the results before you even put in the work must be real frustrating.

I do find myself in such an instance where the will to go full in on a task is less than giving it my all. Though they tend to be rare occasions or am not fully keen on the task.

Most of the time I give my all to a worthy course.

It's like a spectrum and when we find ourselves on the low end, we can't muster the effort to go full in on the task at hand. Great that it's a rare occasion for you. It's almost becoming a common occurrence for me. Maybe I need a mental/emotional beating :)

I believe why most people do not want to do their work well and putting effort into it is because they feel the work isn't worth putting so much effort into it. They look down on it and in the end, they miss an opportunity and start regretting. If people can be sincere with what they do without having a second thought or guess, they will excel in it.

Exactly! I think that's the main reason behind why people don't do their work well. The last part about being sincere got me thinking again about my failed attempt in doing the work well. Sincerity is a great quality to have when doing any kind of work.

I think why people don’t put 100% effort into a task id because they know they won’t get quick or immediate results. It’s difficult putting in 100% effort into something that doesn’t pay off almost instantly. We looove instant gratification and our effort will mot be rewarded immediately, we lack the motivation to do the work properly.

Right. That's a great point! The knowing that there won't be any immediate rewards or no rewards at all will definitely make it hard for people to do the work 100%. We are moved more by the prospect of getting rewarded in a desired time frame.

There are times when even we want to give it our all, certain things happen and like you said, we end up doing it half-heartedly. To me, it's forgivable as long as we don't get used to it, hehe :)

Lol, yes! I think so too. As far as we don't get comfortable with it and make it a habit, it is understandable. Besides, those times are inevitable.

That's very true. We can't totally get away with them.

Well, I'm sure an advocate of this saying because why start it initially if you know you weren't going to do an excellent job.

I believe in leaving my footprints wherever I've gone and that involves doing extremely good to the best of my ability in whatever I've selected to do

Exactly, I think it's better to not do it at all or do it to our utmost best we we chose to do it.

That's how we become someone!

Most times, people don't think about the end result when they start lollygagging. They just do as the please and in the end, the result of their lollygagging is shown.

It's always best to either do something whole-heartedly or not do it at all. It's worthy to note that when people do things half heartedly, the results are not always nice as there would be glitches/ set backs.

That's also how I try to see it. When the end results is not clear or why one is doing a task is not clear, the end result always ends up been subpar and not up to standards.

A teacher of mine said it best when he said give it your all or waste your time.
