Birthday Bullion - Help Me Decide!

avatar

Evening #silvergoldstackers and Hive. The post I am writing this evening is quite an exciting one for me, because it talks about the topic of celebrating me! Tonight I am discussing my upcoming birthday, this year is a big milestone birthday year, which most people would be dreading, but I am actually very excited for. 🍾

The initial plan for my birthday was to plan a large party with live band, and invite a group of friends and family over to celebrate. To cut a long story short that won't be happening any more, as we were in the middle of a big renovation and our builder went bust. We are currently working through the insurance process, but unfortunately our newly renovated house will no longer be finished in time for my birthday. The whole renovation debacle is an ongoing story that I will share with you all over a number of posts once it has all been resolved. We have definitely learnt a lot of patience and resilience. 🙄

Anyway, enough of the drama stories, let's get back to the exciting topic. So my birthday is fast approaching and my wife has been asking me what I would like as a present for this milestone year. In previous years I have asked for a toolbox, a drill, a jig-saw and other tools like that so that I can enjoy my woodworking hobby.

This year however I am able to splash out a bit more, so my request this year is to get some silver or gold or both. Lucky me right!!! I am like a kid in a candy store, but I honestly do not know what to choose, so I am turning to the wise heads of the #silvergoldstackers community for some advice and suggestions.

The photos that I have conveniently added into this post are basically the different options and ideas I am contemplating at the moment. Just before sitting down to write this post, I had a quick chat with my wife to see what sort of budget we could set aside for my birthday present.

I already knew that from the rest of the family they are going to give me AU $1,000.00 😁 and my amazing wife said that we can spare around AU $1,500.00 🤑. I know right, how spoilt am I!!!

All up I have a AU $2,500.00 budget for my birthday bullion present. The Aussie stacker community might notice that my budget is coincidently very similar to the spot price of 1oz of gold. That is definitely my first option on the table. If you look at the first two photos in the post, I have had my eye on that beautiful 1oz 2021 Gold Swan coin, which I know is available from one of the local bullion dealers, but I would have to move quickly as they do not last. That beauty would be consume the entire budget.

The next option would to opt for a generic 1oz silver bar, that would be a similar price to the Gold Swan coin, but I would probably still have about AU $200.00 to play with to pick up 4 or 5 silver bullion coins. It is a more sensible option, but not quite as exciting as the Gold Swan.

Moving away from gold for a moment, I could use all the money to purchase various silver coins. I would be able to get a sealed roll if I liked or I could buy a number of different silver coin designs and sizes from a number of different mints from around the world. This would be a fun treasure hunt type option, that would take a bit more time, but I would have a lot of fun doing it.

Then again, I could revert to being sensible again and focus on low premium, higher ounce silver bars. Many of the dealers offer low premium 10oz bars for around AU $380.00, which means I could get around 6 x 10oz bars for my birthday budget.

An even lower premium option would be to buy a couple 1kg silver bars that are going for around AU $1,150.00, which leaves AU $200.00 still to play with for a few silver coins.

Finally, another option is to switch back to gold, but this time look at fractional gold coins. I personally think the 1/10oz is great size gold coin. If I were to spend my entire budget on various coin designs of 1/10oz gold coins, I could by up to 8 coins. Yes this option would not make the most economical sense, but once again it would be a treasure hunt and a lot of fun sourcing the exact coins I wanted.

Well there you have it, that is my brain dump of options for you all to work your way through and advise me on. I would love to read your comments below offering your own suggestions or which one of my suggestions you prefer.

That gold Swan is very tempting. I was browsing a few sites last night. Found a cool 5 piece 1990 platinum Koala set which I really like... so many great choices out there.

I'm looking at getting a Gold Buffalo personally but the Gold swan is not too shabby either. (Not financial advice) Lol! There is too many choices only limited by not enough stimulus cash. Your choice will probably the right one be it silver or gold. (Psst, She would probably like the swan)

Hey @kerrislravenhill, a few people are suggesting the Swan, it is very tempting. I am a bit partial to gold at the moment. I saw a really nice old Perth Mint gold nugget set that caught my eye recently. sooooooo many choices.

The premiums would lead me towards the gold swan. As it sees like the best "bang for your buck". Good luck and have fun deciding!!

@fat-elvis, I am definitely struggling to decide. I really need to sit down and think it through soon as my Bday is fast approaching.
