The Lamberti tower is a tower located in the Veneto region (Verona, Italy). This tower is on the edge of one of the best known and most visited squares in Verona, Piazza delle Erbe. This tower represents one of the main historical symbols of Verona.

La torre dei Lamberti è una torre che si trova in Italia, nella regione Veneto a Verona. Questa torre è ai margini di una delle piazze più conosciute e visitate di Verona, Piazza delle Erbe. Questa torre rappresenta uno dei principali simboli storici di Verona.

The construction of this tower dates back to 1172 AD. It is 84 m high and has 368 steps leading to the top. It was built at the behest of the Lamberti family.

La costruzione di questa torre risale al 1172 d.C., è alta 84 m ed ha 368 scalini che portano in cima alla torre. Nacque per volere della famiglia Lamberti.

The Romanesque style was considered for the construction of this tower, i.e. the walls were made of brick alternating with tuff. The tower at the time was only 37 m high, in fact the alternation of brick and tuff is only visible in the lower part of the tower.

Per la costruzione di questa torre fu pensato lo stile romanico, cioè le pareti erano in mattoni alternati a tufo. La torre a suo tempo era alta solo 37 m, infatti l’alternanza di mattoni e tufo è visibile solo nella parte bassa della torre.

In 1295, the two bells were placed. These were called Rengo and Maragona. These two bells were recast in 1452. Initially, the function of these two bells was to summon all inhabitants in case of fire or the outbreak of war.

Nel 1295 furono posizionate le due campane. Queste furono chiamate Rengo e Maragona. Queste due campane nel 1452 furono rifuse. Inizialmente la funzione di queste due campane era quella di chiamare a raccolta tutti gli abitanti in caso di incendi o dello scoppio di una guerra.

One event radically changed the history of this tower. In 1403, lightning struck the top of the tower, causing a great deal of damage. The tower remained in a precarious condition for a few years until, more or less in 1450, restoration work began, which included raising the tower. Thus at that time, the Lamberti tower reached the height it has today, i.e. 84 m.
Basically, this tower was built at two very different times; in fact, on the lower part we notice the style of the Veronese Romanesque style, i.e. the alternation of brick and tuff, while the rest of the tower is built of brick.

Un evento cambió in maniera radicale la storia di questa torre. Nel 1403 un fulmine si scagliò sulla cima creando diversi danni. La torre rimase in precarie condizioni per un po’ di anni fino a quando più o meno nel 1450 iniziarono dei lavori di restauro i quali comprendevano anche l’innalzamento. Così in quel periodo la torre dei Lamberti raggiunse l’altezza che ha ora, cioè l’altezza di 84 m.
Sostanzialmente questa torre è stata costruita in due tempi ben diversi infatti sulla parte inferiore notiamo lo stile del romanico veronese e cioè l’alternarsi di mattoni e tufo, mentre il resto della torre è costruito in mattoni.

Towards the end of the 18th century, the famous tower clock was added, visible from all over the city.

Verso la fine del 1700 venne aggiunto il famoso orologio della torre, visibile da tutta la città.

In 1972 the tower was opened to the public and even today tourists can climb to the highest point of the tower from where they can enjoy a spectacular view.

Nel 1972 la torre fu aperta al pubblico ed ancora oggi i turisti possono salire nel punto più alto della torre da dove si può godere di una vista spettacolare.

Today, the Lamberti Tower is one of the most visited tourist spots in the city of Verona. I have visited it and I personally think that it is one of those places you absolutely must see when you are in the Verona area. From the top of this tower you can enjoy the magnificent panorama of the city of Verona.

Oggi la torre dei Lamberti è uno dei luoghi turistici più visitati della città di Verona. L’ho visitata e personalmente ritengo che sia uno di quei posti assolutamente da vedere quando ci si trova nella zona di Verona. Dall’alto di questa torre si può godere del magnifico panorama della città di Verona.
