Airline Companies Starting To Weight Passengers

Today i read an interesting post that may change how we travel soon mostly prices increases and it might even lead to some discrimination .

That’s right: New Zealand’s Civil Aviation Authority is asking that its national airline weigh passengers departing on international flights from Auckland International Airport through July 2, 2023.

The program, which Air New Zealand calls a passenger weight survey, is a way to gather data on the weight load and distribution for planes, the airline said.

“We weigh everything that goes on the aircraft – from the cargo to the meals onboard, to the luggage in the hold,” Alastair James, the airline’s load control improvement specialist said in a statement. “For customers, crew and cabin bags, we use average weights, which we get from doing this survey.”

Still, weight is a personal thing that not everyone wishes to disclose. In order to protect individuals’ privacy, the airline says it has made the data anonymous.

Korean Air becomes the first airline to weigh passengers as well, following a decision not by the company itself -as was the case with Air New Zealand-, but following an order from the country's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The reason given was to ensure accurate aircraft valuations.

What this means: as an airplane takes off, it is subject to a very strict and rigid weight limit regulation. Therefore, the new measure aims to better calculate the weight of everything and everything that goes on the plane, in order to make the flight safer.

This is what flight experts claim. Until now an average passenger weight has been used "but many people are more kilos", aeronautics say, with studies confirming a worldwide increase in weight compared to the 2000s.

Well i can understand their arguments about how they want to have more information about the real weight of the plane because that will make it even more secure but i am sure at the end of the day we will see the airlines using that in order to increase their profits they are seeing us like luggage.

I don't know much if the weight is truly needed to balance or make the plane safer if it is than good but if not then there's no point on checking people's weight.

It is true the new generation weight heavier than the previous due to our modern food we can only see what happens in the future.

Interesting post btw.

Hahah I can already see some people doing some extreme miracle diets three days before the flight so the scale doesn't show too much :D

I actually like this as there is nothing worse than sitting next to a tubby person who overflows into your seat and is paying the same price as you. Airlines have to have strict weight controls and passengers should be treated like luggage with excess weight paying a fee. An aero plane accumulates roughly 1 ton of dust per 5 year (747 size) period along with condensation etc. Unfortunately weight is a key factor in running costs and this should have been a factor weighing passengers long ago. I do think people are bigger now compared to a few decades ago due to what we all eat.
