Depression, If you've never been there, you can't say anything about there

avatar

Should we really call it one of the phases of life we've got to pass through or is it just a sign of weakness?

I honestly don't know but what I know for sure is that no one is immuned to depression, it can hit anyone and then what matters the most at that point in time becomes how you respond to it of which most times, you really need people around you! People to keep encouraging you.

I have been depressed before so I really could relate to the prompt fully well.

To be honest, depression is one of the few words that I really can't come to fully explain because the feeling is just too tormenting not only to the person but to everyone around him or her.
Regardless, I'll try to make you understand how it comes.

Features of Depression
  • Anhedonia:

Everybody has one or two things that gives them unique joy, like I mean, very unique joy that they could laugh out their sorrows with.

In depressive phases, people get to not be happy nor derive joy from pleasurable activities they formerly enjoy...
Nothing gives them joy at all, not even what they previously enjoyed the most.... That's Anhedonia!
Persistently, they feel sad and has no interest in anything at all.

  • Suicidal Thoughts:

No one would in his right state of mind think of killing his or herself but then, in depressive phases, the thought of ending it all flashes your mind and depending on the level of support you have or didn't have at those moments might lead to you taking a wrong move to end your life.

  • Low Self-esteem

People who suffer depression persistently feel down... They've lost hope and self-confidence in themselves. They just can't come to trust themselves that they are able to do anything that could be productive, they look up to even persons they were previously better than and sees themselves constantly as failure.

  • Self-Isolation

Not only do they doubt themselves but they withdraw themselves from social activities; they love to be alone at those periods and literally hides from everyone.
Don't love communicating with anyone at all... It's that bad indeed.

My Depressive phase

Not like I'm that brilliant but then, ever since I started going to school, there has never been an exam that I genuinely prepared for that I failed, I really don't know what failure looks like all the way from nursery school but then my 5th professional exam took a wrong turn.

I prepared well for the exam, the exam went well but then the results came out and boom, there was massive failure and I was among.
Jeez! I felt like my whole world crumbled right in front of my eyes.
This drove me to the edges of my depressive phases.

How did I get past through it?

I couldn't do anything personally at first, I was very down and kept asking myself what was it I didn't get right at the first attempt.
Reading what I've read before was tormenting... While reading a page, I already knew what I was expecting in the next page and I couldn't pick a new information because this was a text I read through many times for the exam.

The second attempt was already fast approaching but then, I couldn't get myself together, I was literally devastated.

This is when friends comes in!

My friends were always there to encourage me, served as my alarm clock all through those phases and made sure I was okay. They literally provided me with everything I needed.

They were there to gist with me and also try to put a smile on me which wasn't long lasting but then, went a long way.

I owe them a lot.

Lessons learnt

Everyone on earth should really have a genuine friend(s) who will come through for him or her in times of these moments.

Every phase in life with the right response to it will definitely end, if not immediately in near future but then, it's really not easy to give in that right response.

I came to understand that indeed failure is one thing but then, the real deal is the sequelae... Jeez, the psychological impact of that failure is what destroys dreams!

Depression is what you will never wish on anyone, not even your enemy but then, it seems to come without anyone's consent.
Offer help to the best of your ability to anyone in that phase, your sentence alone might go a long way in preventing a disastrous outcome.

Thanks for reading and have a good day ahead

Going through depression is something serious and isn't easy to get out of, but with support of those around us we'll scale through, just like your friends were there for you during the mass failure in a particular course.

We always need friends who would stick closer than family if we must survive in this world. You're lucky to have found that friend of yours

Depression can hit anyone but what matters most is how we respond to it. When we are depressed and decided not to seek help, even in those lonely times, different and negative thoughts starts creeping in and all we do is to follow through and ending our lives when we could have just talked to someone.

On other hand, it is important to have genuine friends who truly cares for you.

That's the point.... Talking about it helps but it all lies on who you talk to and that's why it's important to have genuine friends
Thanks for reading

Oh dear! I wonder if I knew you then when you had that fail, would have told you it's not your fault at all since you prepared for it.

Failure is part of our success stories, and as you've said, it thought you lessons that you'll carry for a long time.

My mentor ☺️
I know you'll always come through for me whenever the occasion calls for it.
Indeed, we all know it's not the end of the world but it's just that at those moments of pain, you get eluded by just pain
