The Love Hypothesis | Book Review 📚

I must confess that I had some apprehension to read this book, it was one of the first I got when I had the Kindle in my hands and I started with the search for the most popular books of the moment. One of the things that worried me the most was that it was based in the world of biology, so I didn't know what I was going to get, but I can tell you that I was pleasantly surprised. Debo confesarles que tenía cierta aprehensión de leerme este libro, fue uno de los primeros que obtuve cuando tuve el Kindle en mis manos y empecé con la búsqueda de los libros más populares del momento. Una de las cosas que más me preocupaba es que estaba basado en el mundo de la biología, así que no sabía con qué iban a salir, pero les puedo adelantar de que salí gratamente sorprendida. Olive Smith is a PhD student at Stanford University in California, and one day she makes the decision to very randomly kiss the first person she meets in the hallway just so her best friend will understand that Olive doesn't care one bit if she starts dating her ex. What she didn't realize is that she kissed Adam, a college professor hated by everyone. Surprisingly, a fake relationship begins between the two that benefits both of them for one reason or another.

Olive Smith es una estudiante de Doctorado en la Universidad de Stanford en California, y un día toma la decisión de besar muy al azar a la primera persona que se encuentra en el pasillo solo para que su mejor amiga entienda que a Olive no le importa ni un poco que empiece a salir con su ex. Lo que no se percató es que besó a Adam, un profesor de la universidad odiado por todos. Sorprendentemente, entre ambos empieza una falsa relación que beneficia a ambos por una u otra razón.

This 2021 romantic comedy is written by Ali Hazelwood, who, fortunately, is a biologist, book lover and understands academia perfectly. She started out writing as a hobby and ended up being a writer with two Best Sellers and another on the verge of becoming one.

I loved many things about the book, the references to the field of biology are wonderful and not at all invasive. That is, it is written nicely so that those who understand absolutely nothing about biology can enjoy the book without any inconvenience.

The writing is simple, so you can read the book in one sitting. I read it in an afternoon. It is easy, straightforward and a lot of fun. Although it is not intense or deep, it shows between the lines something that happens a lot in the academic world: sexual harassment by men with power, only men hold higher positions and another thing, which is linked to this, is the systematic machismo.

Although the latter is not mentioned much, when I was a biology student we saw some pretty strong cases. Fortunately, I had female professors, most of whom conducted spectacular research, and the inequality at my university was not so noticeable. However, on a field trip, I witnessed an incredible case of machismo on the part of a professor.

Esta comedia romántica del 2021 está escrita por Ali Hazelwood, quien, por fortuna, es una bióloga, amante de los libros y entiende perfectamente el mundo académico. Ella empezó escribiendo como hobby y terminó siendo una escritora con dos Best Sellers y otro a punto de serlo.

Del libro me encantaron muchas cosas, las referencias referentes al campo de la biología son maravillosas y nada invasivas. Es decir, que está escrito amablemente para que aquellos que no entiendan absolutamente nada de biología, puedan disfrutar del libro sin ningún inconveniente.

La escritura es sencilla, por lo que puedes leer el libro en una sola sentada. Yo lo leí en una tarde. Es fácil, sencillo y muy divertido. Aunque no es intenso ni profundo, marca entre líneas algo que pasa muchísimo en el mundo académico: acoso sexual de hombres con poder, solo los hombres ostentas cargos superiores y otra cosa, que está aunado a esto, es el machismo sistemático.

Aunque esto último no lo nombran mucho, cuando fui estudiante de biología veíamos casos bastante fuertes. Por fortuna, tuve profesoras, que en su mayoría dirigían investigaciones espectaculares y no se notaba tanto la desigualdad en mi universidad. Sin embargo, en una salida de campo me tocó presenciar un caso de machismo increíble por parte de un profesor.

In order to reduce travel costs, trips were organized among several subjects in order to travel in one bus. It was not really difficult to organize this because Biology is a scientific career of the pure sciences, and we were not at all numerous, that is to say, a subject could easily have 4 students. That's why we went out together. Generally, all the students knew each other, so the other students were classmates but in other subjects. There was a specific one: entomology, or the study of insects. In that subject, there were 10 students, 2 of whom were girls. One of them was even a model, but she was an outstanding student. One night, in the middle of the field, it started to rain. Rain in the field is paradise for biologists, because animals come out that you don't see all the time. So everyone began to get ready to go looking for insects in the rain, and one, crazier, to look for frogs. The teacher gave the order, but told the girls that they were not going, that this was a job for men.

I was shocked, because I had previously been told that the professor didn't like women in that class, that it was an elective. But seeing that with my own eyes left me in shock, I couldn't believe it. What is the difference between a man and a woman in the field hunting insects? Would they get wetter? Does it require the physical strength of a male? I never understood, never understood, and never will understand that situation.Obviously, I never chose that subject, even though I thought butterflies were beautiful.

Another case I got to witness was in the fishing field, in case you didn't know, all industrial fishing boats must have a biologist on board to count all the species caught and discarded. It is one of the most lucrative jobs as biologists, several of my buddies worked on these boats in the summer to raise money. It was a lot of money. But guess what... No commercial fleet in the world, except the United States, accepts women on board.

Para rebajar costos de viaje, se organizaban salidas entre varias asignaturas para poder viajar en un solo autobús. Realmente no era difícil organizar esto porque Biología es una carrera científica de las ciencias puras y no éramos para nada numerosos, es decir, una asignatura podía tener fácilmente 4 estudiantes. Es por esto que se hacían salidas en conjunto. Generalmente, todos los estudiantes nos conocíamos, así que los otros estudiantes eran compañeros de clases pero en otras materias. Había una específico: entomología, o el estudio de insectos. En esa materia había 10 estudiantes, de los cuales 2 eran chicas. Una de ellas incluso era modelo, pero era una estudiante destacada. Una noche, en pleno campo, empezó a llover. La lluvia en el campo es el paraíso para los biólogos, porque salen animales que no se ven todo el tiempo. Así que todos empezaron a prepararse para ir a buscar insectos bajo la lluvia, y uno, más loco, a buscar ranas. El profesor dio la orden, pero le dijo a las chicas que ellas no iban, que ese era un trabajo para hombres.

Yo me quedé impactada, porque anteriormente me habían dicho que al profesor no le gustaban las mujeres en esa clase, que era electiva. Pero haber visto eso con mis propios ojos me dejó en shock, no lo podía creer. ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre un hombre y una mujer en el campo cazando insectos? ¿Se iban a mojar más? ¿Requiere una fuerza física de machos? Nunca entendí, nunca comprendí ni comprenderé esa situación. Obviamente, nunca escogí esa materia por más que las mariposas me parecieran hermosísimas.

Otro caso que llegué a presenciar fue en el campo pesquero, por si no lo sabían, todos los barcos industriales de pesca deben tener un biólogo a bordo para contabilizar todas las especies capturadas y descartadas. Es uno de los trabajos más lucrativos como biólogos, varios de mis compañeros trabajaban en estos barcos en verano para reunir dinero. Era mucho dinero. Pero, adivinen qué… Ninguna flota comercial en el mundo, a excepción de la de los Estados Unidos, acepta mujeres a bordo.

As I say, although the book is not deep in terms of this, it does touch on the issues. And for me, it was impossible not to remember and touch on those issues. What I did find very funny is that the professor, the protagonist of it all, although he was an unbearable being, as most of them are, was an Adonis. Muscular, tall, handsome, and with a lot of money. Characteristics not enjoyed by any researcher I have ever met because there were two sides: either they were nerds or they were hippies 🤣, like Adam, I did not know any of them.

Anyway, if you want to read a light romance that deserves the Hype it has on the internet, read The Theory of Love. I also hope they do some movie adaptation to it. That would be wonderful. Como les digo, aunque el libro no es profundo en cuanto a esto, si tocan los temas. Y para mí fue imposible no recordar y tocar esos temas. Lo que sí me dio mucha gracia es que el profesor, el protagonista de todo, aunque era un ser insoportable, como suelen ser la mayoría, era todo un Adonis. Musculoso, alto, guapo, y con mucho dinero. Características de las que no goza ningún investigador que yo haya conocido porque había dos vertientes: o eran nerds o eran hippies 🤣, así como Adam, no conocí ninguno.

En fin, si quieren leerse un romance ligero que merece el Hype que tiene en las redes, lean La teoría del amor. También espero que le hagan alguna adaptación al cine. Sería maravilloso.
