Tales of the Urban Explorer: The Blue Pearl

avatar
(Edited)

The Blue Pearl was not on our agenda last August. We were returning from a hard days exploring when we passed this miserable looking place.

Being close to where @dizzydiscovery lives, he explained that it had been empty for some time and due to it being not super exciting looking had failed to mention it before.

An old pub is an exploration for me, and a bonus one is always nice.

I did a little checking on The Blue Pearl and found a reference on Trip Advisor but the content had been removed.

This article is quite typical of the speed of development when a building is targeted for demolition. That is, it takes years for them to move off their arses and do something.

Being in a ‘don’t give shit mode’, we parked on the old pub car park and scoured the exterior for entrance points. The obvious one was on the roof with a massive pallet being stacked against what looked like an extension.

Before I knew it, @dizzydiscovery was scrambling up and disappearing into what was once a window that now contained little glass.

18_IMG_4801_18.jpg

I followed a little more slowly and made more work of clambering through the small window to find him waiting with some news inside.

A bloke saw us getting in over in the other pub on the other side of the road’, he said squarely with a frown.

This means only one thing. Get your photography done, and don’t fuck about. The cops may come but in these times of austerity and airborne diseases, they generally have more pressing 'crimes' to attend.

The upper storey was messy and contained very little. It was a case of descending that stairway to see what the bar would bring us.

The Blue Pearl was once an Indian Restaurant and with its former legacy stamped on the internet, not ranked too highly.

...'19th out of 23 restaurants makes it.., a visit once place with a vow never to return. You can always find clues on why it closed'...

There is a little more blurb here from 2014 but this has obviously been written by the owners and contains no reviews.

So ultimately why The Blue Pearl closed its doors is a mystery?

3_IMG_4785_3.jpg

4_IMG_4786_4.jpg

Downstairs promised many beer glasses, menus, and more menus, but little else. You can have a dirty menu or a clean one.

5_IMG_4787_5.jpg

It’s not like there is a shortage of these hanging around.

6_IMG_4788_6.jpg

In fact, there are boxes of them.

8_IMG_4790_8.jpg

9_IMG_4791_9.jpg

This type of menu with leather bindings would be given to arriving hosts.

7_IMG_4789_7.jpg

The prices are quite cheap and provided us with some clue as to how long it has been closed.

10_IMG_4792_10.jpg

When you see Cobra glasses, you know you are in an Indian Restaurant, and it's a decent beer. I was surprised the glasses have survived.

13_IMG_4795_13.jpg

Tempting as it was, I did not even open the box of Roses for a nibble.

14_IMG_4796_14.jpg

...'I know what you are thinking..., that's a giant green dildo to the left of the boxes of menus.., and you are right.. it was...'...

It was a little sparse inside besides the usual rotting woodwork.

12_IMG_4794_12.jpg

11_IMG_4793_11.jpg

See that window on the right side of the bar? The wooden shutter was resting against it. There’s always an easier way in (or out) in the case if you have a good look.

With no sirens blazing, we jumped through and replaced the wooden shutter.

15_IMG_4797_15.jpg

To get back to the car we had to walk around the front of this rotting mini-monster, and with no sign of the witness to our infiltration left feeling a little underwhelmed.

A pretty good bonus explore it seems to me. It just amazes me that the glasses and tap room remain so intact. Is it just teenagers in UK that are too lazy or spoiled to rip off a good night of beer drinking? Or is it a world wide lethargy?

The pub is on the edge of the moors, and probably why it's been saved from mass vandalism. It's not pretty inside but the glasses were quite usable. A shame those kegs had no Cobra left inside!

Surprisingly intact this one. Looks like they just didn't bother to come back and clear everything out. Another place that will just rot or get torched.

@dizzydiscovery tells me it has been marked for demolition. Another pub lost from our heritage, as it was once was a regular one.

It is really interesting how similar to each other some of these places look like from the outside. Is it a requirement over there that pubs be white and located on a corner?

LOL, on a corner is common. It then has more visibility. When it was built this would have been a cart track for horses. That was a time before the motor car. It would have been used as an overnight stop then as well as a place to get pissed.

It is a great exploration, the place is a disaster but it is amazing to see how the glasses are intact and in position, you can tell that no one returned to that place

No graffiti either. Being in the middle of nowhere helps a great deal.

So tempting to nab a Cobra glass. Where else could you get a genuine one from.., but one can't break the code.

So glad someone picked up on that, it took me all of 5 minutes to fabricate that bit of data 😄

It seems that the owner of Blue Pearl had made some effort to survive in business before closed down. i noticed that they printed out so many promotional materials but left it behind. Another great treasure hunt story for the year end of 2020.

Wishing every day of the new year to be filled with success, happiness, and prosperity for you, your families and the ones you love. Happy New Year 2021.

Cheers/ !WINE

I drove past this in the summer and couldn’t get in, I think it’s the same one, up on the moors?
Those lurid coloured menus are enough to close the place down.

Yes, it's on the edge of the moors.., you didn't miss an awful lot besides menus and beer glasses.

I've heard that restaurant business is quite tricky so no wonder that the majority fail and end up rotting. It's a pity though
