Tales of the Urban Explorer: Lord Nelson Pottery

avatar
(Edited)

'Lord Nelson Pottery' used to be famous, even me..., a most assuredly, 'non-pottery' fan has heard of it. Your grandma may have some dotted around the house with the 'Lord Nelson' stamp on the underside.

21_IMG_5626_21.jpg

The Lord now is not what he used to be. What's left of the buildings are in ruins and the owners have repeatedly been issued fines for not taking care of their property.

24_IMG_5629_24.jpg

They must be a rich company, to not demolish the little that is left, and that’s not taking into account all the land. New housing has sprung up around the former ‘Lord Nelson Pottery’ works, a lovely sight for the new residents to feast their eyes on every morning while drinking their coffee.

…’ ‘Lord Nelson Pottery’ around 1890. No cars, just horses and carts and a thoroughly depressing place to work’…

map.JPG

I had scouted the place out using Google Maps and figured the front edge was a bad approach. The street was lined with a large solid-looking fence with a multitude of Karens' who would be straining their necks to see what we were doing.

26_IMG_5631_26.jpg

It took little time to find this fencing that at first glance looks solid. If you look more closely the left side has been snipped away with wire cutters to reveal an easy access point.

We were through in seconds and wading our way through the usual mix of brambles, nettles, and thick brush intent on impeding our progress toward the closest wreck of a building.

2_IMG_5606_2.jpg

Someone is living here and surely a female? The black item is not filthy lingerie as it appears to be but the whole setup does look a bit girly.

1_IMG_5605_1.jpg

I zoned in on the paperwork. It’s from Staffordshire University. It costs a LOT to educate yourself, and our government is secretly working on an agenda to create a workforce of dunces and dumbasses. Some of the students have to hang out in the likes of HERE for a little free accommodation.

Maybe that was a sexy derelict bra come to think of it? The tassels look flimsy.

3_IMG_5607_3.jpg

There’s little use for this, and it won’t wake you up in the morning; so much for getting to your lectures on time.

4_IMG_5608_4.jpg

The student accommodation rooms were free from needles for once and that is a nice comfortable armchair to hang out on, with the finest 'spew-colored' leather.

5_IMG_5609_5.jpg

Heading further into the depths of ‘Lord Nelson Pottery’, we found bricks, many bricks and mostly from the upper areas of the building.

6_IMG_5610_6.jpg

Out there it looked a little clearer than our approach to the old factory. It’s best not to look up and imagine all that shit falling on you as you saunter underneath it.

7_IMG_5612_7.jpg

One room was full of unfinished 'Lord Nelson Pottery' products as well as rusty shelving. Just like the previous potteries I had visited, the style of these products was familiar, all circular with dimples added.

8_IMG_5613_8.jpg

Back there, there could have been more booty, behind the useful advice added to the wall.

9_IMG_5614_9.jpg

The papers were discussing DBS checks. They were unlikely to be associated with our ‘derelict student’ who lives in another section of ‘Lord Nelson Pottery’.

10_IMG_5615_10.jpg

He looks quite cool but also looks like he was drawn a decade ago. Graffiti as well as ancient buildings don’t last forever.

11_IMG_5616_11.jpg

The ceiling fans managed to outsurvive just about everything else.

12_IMG_5617_12.jpg

I am guessing the protruding bits fit into the holes. Just like when a man gets together with a woman. Do I need to spell it out?

13_IMG_5618_13.jpg

On the floor in front of 'Mr. Big Teeth' lay many more items of pottery, not all of them broken.

14_IMG_5619_14.jpg

I suspect it’s the remains of one of those firing kilns. I saw no large cavernous holes such as the ones in Falcon Pottery.

15_IMG_5620_15.jpg

There was little point in a stroll that way. The green shit at the end would stop anyone from passing.

16_IMG_5621_16.jpg

17_IMG_5622_17.jpg

This row of interconnecting buildings is all that is left of 'Lord Nelson Pottery'. It sits beside a canal as did most of the industry from those times. They needed to easily transport their goods around the country.

18_IMG_5623_18.jpg

…’@anidiotexplores dejectedly mulls about, looking for anything of interest. You had to look hard for anything in this one’…

19_IMG_5624_19.jpg

20_IMG_5625_20.jpg

Another room tucked away yielded more pottery. So long as your expectations don’t get too high you will be fine. Seeing a multitude of sex toys is an example of that.

There’s always the abandoned ‘Big dicks and juicy holes’ branch on the other side of town for those items.

25_IMG_5630_25.jpg

Finding a myriad of holes in this set of buildings we figured a few externals would give some idea of just what is left. Close by was the housing estate, but not quite close enough to give us any issues.

22_IMG_5627_22.jpg

Why they haven’t finished this place off is quite unbelievable. It could be this section is protected with a Grade II listing or something; fucking ridiculous.

23_IMG_5628_23.jpg

We left ‘Lord Nelson Pottery’ thinking this was the worst of all the potteries so far. Yet there were equally bad ones on the close horizon.

Wow, not much to see… completely derelict. No idea why they don’t tear it down. Nothing left…
Didn’t look like the student was still there.
Great captures of the exploration though 😎
Have a nice Friday!

Didn’t look like the student was still there.

You never know. They don't tend to hang in the sleeping quarters during the daytime.

Any of the pottery still look useful at all? I wonder if the want to be college student was off following the advice on the wall thinking it was a lecture note.

Like anywhere else, I never intend to take anything with me, so only give items a passing glance. It all looked unfired and in preparation for that step.

This is a serious health hazard. The Family must be ultra rich to keep this mess standing despite the fines.

Student papers and a DBS check? I suspect it was a student teacher living there?

What a fucking disgrace this country has become under these Tory fuckheads.

I watched the Peterloo massacre movie about the Manchester mill workers. (Freedom of association)

We are experiencing the same shit just a different century.

Could be, would a teacher be sleeping rough?

Changing times and demand. The grannies buy their pots from Car Boot markets now.

would a teacher be sleeping rough?

It's highly probable that a student teacher could be sleeping rough considering the tuition fees and obscene rent costs of staying in university accommodation or anywhere else for that matter.

I saw something yesterday that 75% of students are holding down full time jobs in order to continue their studies.

This is way up from when I was a mature student.
I was the only one that I was aware of that worked full time. I had a family to support.

The grannies buy their pots from Car Boot markets now.

It's all they can afford along with a growing number of the middle class. Except the middle class kid on it's trendy! 😂👍🏼

Potteries another great industry quietly dying off after half a century of thriving during Industrial boom of yesteryear. Pity it has fallen into such bad condition, also surprising not demolished to utilize the land with housing, someone still obviously has a plan!

Yeah, they could double the size of that nearby housing estate. The companies buy the old decaying property and then sit on it. Dumb!

Looks 'mouldy' to me ;) Little pottery joke there. Looks like the place is falling down. As the government are supposed to be getting more houses built they ought to force some of these abandoned factory sites to be developed. You would think the owners would welcome the money. It would be better than destroying more countryside.

Too true, maybe they liked being fined? The linked article doesn't mention if they paid up or not. Maybe another fine should be issued.

It has to be costing them money just in council rates. Ah well, makes no sense to me.

I wouldn't be surprised these days if half the students end up destitute the way their "funding" is going!

Don't I know it. My daughter is at Uni and every year has to fight to get her Student Loan. They want my P60 and income details. She's 19.., so what the fuck have I to do with it? She's > 18 and an ADULT. Lend her the fucking money, and she can take 30 years to repay it at 50p a week I say.

Thats the rub though aint it, they take it back through the tax man. Something I have always thought of as right dastardly. Yeah, they use the parents details to assess what she is entitled to. You have ti jump through hoops to be treated like an independent adult

In short, I never cease to be amazed when you find these places and post their entrails... There is something surreal in seeing all those images and thinking that once it was a place where a company worked... It's a pleasure to read your articles dear dude, thanks so much for sharing... As always, I was in awe of the drama and complexity your photos display!

and thinking that once it was a place where a company worked...

Most of the factory got torn down around 2016, it was much bigger once. They could have taken the last part down at the same time methinks.

I feel like pottery must have been pretty popular over there. This isn't the first pottery place you have done right? Nice shots though. Trashed as all get out though!

There might be more, I will need to look through the repo. All of them were in a mess. Pottery was big business here once.

Here I thought Lord Nelson was a naval officer. I never knew he got around to founding a pottery business too. What a guy! Looks like a lovely place.

Oh a more serious note, another great series of photos and writeup. That graffiti is cool.

It might stay open a little longer if they named it, 'Big sticks and juicy holes'.. so long as Mary Whitehouse's offspring don't get wind?

too bad I didn't get to see such stamp, or maybe I never took note.

Now I wonder what would make people leave behind so many poetry. Did the building collapse or something? It looks abandoned to me.

Incredible visit... as always ! I will show that to my partner as she's a ceramist and I believe that she'll pretty interested :)

I think that those white things are molds, mostly made from plaster, sometimes in silicon now.

Thank you for sharing this one, I hope that you're doing well 🤞
