It's @skyehi, taking a break from the wrestling list series, let's do a little wrestling 101. Now I believe there may be a couple of passionate wrestling enthusiasts and people that dream of becoming wrestlers.
In today's blog we're going to talk a little briefly on the art of promos in professional wrestling.

Professional wrestling, a form of entertainment that combines athleticism and vert epic storytelling, is often defined by the moments of in-ring action.
There are basically two things happening in any Wrestling ring. It's either a couple of wrestlers or athletes are going at each other in a fight or they're in a promo towards a fight or main event
Equally as important as the wrestling match in the world of wrestling is the skill of cutting promos. A "promo," which is short for promotional interview, is a wrestler's scripted or improvised speech which has been designed to generate anticipation and interest in an upcoming match or storyline.
I quite remember when Roman Reigns and John Cena had their very first match promo. Cena who was on his way to retirement told Roman Reigns during their promo, "It's Called A Promo Kid, You Gotta Learn How To Do It If You Want to Be The Big Dog" 🤣 that was an epic burn for Roman.
The ability to cut an engaging promo is a talent that can significantly impact a wrestler's career in professional wrestling. Combining good promo skills and epic wrestling skills are the ingredients that make up a superstar and a wrestling legend.
The Power of Verbal Expression
Here's the secret guys, words are a wrestler's most potent tool in professional wrestling. A well-delivered promo has the full potential to captivate the audience and emotionally invest them in the unfolding storyline.
People like The Rock, Stone Cold, John Cena, Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns and currently LA Knight are perfect examples of what you get when you blend the skill of promo with wrestling.
Whether it's a fiery, impassioned speech to hype a championship bout or a humorous, entertaining promo for crowd enjoyment, a wrestler's capacity to convey their character and narrative through words is very crucial ti a successful promo and main event.
During a promo, that's when wrestlers get under the skin of their opponents and beat them mentally even before the main event. If you can talk good, you've already won a portion of the event even before it started.
Character Development
Character development is super important to professional wrestling, and promos are instrumental in this process of character Development.
Whether a Wrestler's character is a villain or a hero will be crafted or determined by their promo.
Wrestlers do a great job of portraying distinct personas, both in and out of the ring.
Through these promos, they can effectively establish their character's motivations, beliefs, and personality, allowing the audience to relate to the wrestler on a personal level and become emotionally involved in their journey.
For example, Roman Reigns portrays as unbeatable and better than all. He would step in the ring during his promos and shout to the crowd "Acknowledge Me".
We have Seth Freaking Rollins who has his character looking similar to the joker in Batman. He's strong and tough but at the same time funny, jovial and very connected to the crowd. When his music plays, he has the entire crowd singing his song.
We have a wrestler like Gunther who shows dominance and some level of wickedness and danger in the ring.
The Duality of Heel and Face
Most wrestling characters like I mentioned earlier on, often fall into two categories: "heels" (villains) and "faces" (heroes).
When cutting a promo as a heel, the wrestler's aim is to generate authentic audience disdain, while faces must connect with fans and earn their support.
Some of the heel wrestlers can go as far as looking like they're disrespecting the crowd which makes the crowd hate them. That's their objective or job anyways so they don't mind.
There are also the faces or heros, they connect with the crowd and come to fight again the heels or villains mostly in defense of the entire crowd.
That's how epic drama is usually created in the Wrestling world, with Heels and Faces.
A well-executed promo can transform a wrestler into a beloved fan favorite or a reviled villain. Some wrestlers play both sides in certain moments of the career. One point they are Heels and the next point they become Faces.
Creating Anticipation and Storylines
Promos serve as the perfect primary tool for building excitement and anticipation for upcoming matches, main events and storylines.
So whether it's a bitter rivalry between two wrestlers or the epic journey to a championship match, promos bring the narrative context that makes the audience eagerly anticipate the in-ring showdown.
One of the best storylines in WWE has been the "Bloodline's Story" every single promo is more epic and dramatic than the last.
When executed effectively, a promo can transform an ordinary match into a must-see main event.
Improvisational Skills and Adaptability
While many promos are scripted, the ability to improvise and adapt is crucial in wrestling and the success of the Promo.
Unexpected situations can occur during a live show, and the wrestlers would need to think on their feet to address them.
Some of the most memorable promos in wrestling history have emerged from such spontaneous and unplanned moments.
There where times where one party could forget his lines and the other would have to find a way to remind them. There are times where you could see that it's pure improvision.
Emotion and Passion
Having passion is a critical element of an exceptional promo. Wrestlers need to convey genuine emotion and belief in their words.
When the audience can see and feel the passion in a wrestler's promo, it is able to create a deeper connection between the fans and the performer.
One of the most unforgettable and classic moments is when Romans Reigns broke to tears in one of his promo. It was as they described it, Classic Cinema happening live.
Learning from Wrestling Legends
Aspiring wrestlers can gain valuable insights and skill by studying the promo skills of legendary figures in the industry.
We have Iconic and legendary wrestlers like "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, The Rock, "Macho Man" Randy Savage and John Cena. These guys are celebrated for their promo abilities.
To draw the curtains on today's blog, the art of promos in professional wrestling is a very vital element of the industry's success.
Just like I said earlier on, the merge between epic promo sills and wrestling skills are usually the ingredients to create a wrestler legend or superstar.
