Greetings to the LeoFinance Community 🦁,

In today's blog post we'll be discussing the role Blockchain technology plays in verifying social media user identity.

Now we all know social media is our daily playground. We have almost everyone sharing some type of content on social media platforms.

Social media gives us the awesome privilege of connecting with our friends and family, sharing awesome videos that will hopefully go viral and staying in the social loop.

However there's this unfortunate situation of fake profiles and identity fraud making social media as dangerous as it is helpful to all of us.

There's are lots of verification methods that traditional social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and TikTok are using to verify real people online.

From using phone number or email verifications to facial recognition. Proving our identities is very necessary to reduce or possibly stop fraudulent behaviors and fake profiles.

People use fake profiles to impersonate other content creators that are actually credible.

If you're familiar with YouTube especially financial videos, the content creators of these financial videos are mostly impersonated by others with fake profiles posing as those original and credible content creators to perform fraudulent activities.

The problem is that traditional ways of proving who's who or verifying identify online just aren't cutting it anymore. A lot of people are easily able to bypass the identity verification process.

Now this is where the blockchain, our digital superhero, comes in.

Let's briefly discuss how this works

The Trouble with Fakes

To properly understand my point just imagine this scenario;

You find yourself on your favorite social media platform, and you start a conversation with a new friend online who seems pretty cool.

Now the question is how do you know the new friend is not a scammer or catfishing you, or even spreading bogus information?

The sad truth about traditional social platforms is that you can't always be sure, and that's the problem we want to address with this blog post.

Blockchain To the Rescue

Blockchain technology is designed to bring transparency on social media platforms. Take a look at platforms that do a pretty good job of merging social media with Blockchain technology like Hive and LeoFinance.

They keep track of every transaction people make on the platform and can easily be checked by anyone.

When you make posts or perform a transaction with Blockchain based social platforms, a timestamp record of each activity is recorded and is very clear for everyone to see.

This goes to discourage plagiarism, fraud and unauthorized editing of the content if original Authors.

Profiles You Can Count On

Now on blockchain-powered social media platforms, each user gets a unique digital ID which they have full control over.

This ID includes your details like your name, where you're from, and the stuff that makes you, well, you.

Once that information is in there, it becomes permanent. There's really no more doubts about whether someone's real or not.

Everything is transparent and it becomes super difficult for fraudsters to take on the identity of real people.

It's really not like Instagram where you can easily set-up an account with someone else's faces and get away with fraudulent activities.

Earning Trust

Blockchain does a pretty good job of watching how you behave online. Every single move you make is recorded and can easily be seen.

For instance when you check your Hive Wallet or the Hivestats.io from LeoFinance, you can see all my activities including when I did a power up or claimed some tokens.

What posts you made, the post you upvoted and the comments you sent on other posts are all recorded and can easily be tracked.

This is the power of Blockchain technology. Tracking and recoding these activities is very good and minimizing fraudulent behaviors.

We've also got mega accounts like Hivewatcher and Spamminator to ensure there's not spamming on a Blockchain based social platform like Hive.

If you're a good contributor to the Hive platform, following the rules, avoiding plagiarism and posting quality content, you get good upvotes and your reputation rises. Others can see your reputation and know you're trustworthy and credible.

Privacy

You're in full control of who sees your stuff and what they can do with it. One great benefit of Blockchain based social media platforms is the power to be anonymous. You can decide to not show certain private details about yourself and still own a credible and trusted account.

Now I know you might be thinking that anonymity will create more room for fraudulent behaviors but that will not be the case on Blockchain based social platforms.

The reason is that since all activities are tracked and everything is super transparent, you can't get away with fraudulent activities on these platforms.

Why Blockchain is a Game-Changing for Identify verification

Bulletproof Security

Blockchain technology records your information down in a timestamp showing detailed recorders of original content making it impossible for anyone else to mess with your content by unauthorized editing or stealing.

Seeing Is Believing

You can easily verify someone's ID on the blockchain, so there's really no more guessing if you're talking to a real human or not.

For instance I'm definitely a human because the process I'll need to go through to have my keys to access my account would definitely ensure that I'm a person. There's even no need for a captcha here😁.

A Fake-Free Zone

Blockchain technology makes it really tough to create fake profiles. This would mean fewer scams and false information spreading around. People's identities are preserved and the entire social platform is safe.

Your Data, Your Rules

Blockchain technology has a way of giving full control of user account information and data to the users. This ain't like Instagram where basically the Meta company owns what you post and your account details and can easily sell it off to any third-party.

You as the account owner decides who gets access to your information and what they can do with it.

Global Connection

Blockchain helps people from all corners of the globe connect securely and easily. The awesome thing about Blockchain is its worldwide capabilities for communication and financial transactions.

You can send and receive messages and cryptocurrency tokens for basically anyone with a Hive or LeoFinance account. It's the entire world right in our hands.

The Challenges and What's Next For Us

Okay, before we all get excited and start migrating from traditional platforms to blockchain-powered social Platforms, let's not ignore the hurdles.

We're talking about making these Blockchain based social Platforms work for billions of people.
Such level of individual control and anonymity would require a lot of rules set to respect privacy and to handle issues like plagiarism.

Now imagine Hive but instead of over a million users, we have 1 billion. That's like a thousand times bigger. How many Hivewatchers or Spamminator accounts do you think would be needed to handle that many accounts and posts.

I believe this would be a great topic for discussion during the next Hive Fest right guys?

I'll also prepare a special blog post about this another time.

Thanks for taking the time to read today's blog post. I hope you found it both intriguing and entertaining.

As always, if you have any question or comment regarding this blog topic, please feel free to share through the comments. I'll be more than happy to respond to your comments guys.

Have a lovely day and catch you next time on LeoFinance 🦁

So does this imply that Hive will require very personal, biometric data in the future?

Or will it continue being a space where genuine profiles will have to be built up from scratch, with no shotgun KYC later on…

Not meant as criticism or negativity, I simply need to know this to be able to go full in on Hive, or not…

Well with innovations in Blockchain advancements and security technology like facial recognition, we can be sure that security will definitely be addressed and updated.

So to answer your question dearest friend ; there would be an even better security and verification technique.

Just like Elon Musk said, we should think of possibilities and not certainties in the future.

I hope you understand my answer or would you need further explain? 🥰
