The Influence of Music and Sound in Video Games - Contributing To Games on Hive

avatar

Greetings to my favorite gaming community online, WOO and greetings to all of Hive.

I'm always super excited to be back in this community to share something both entertaining and informative for everyone.

In one of my previous blogs, I shared on the concept of the Metaverse and how it is going to improving gaming experience for both Blockchain games like WOO, Splinterlands and Terracore and non Blockchain based games like GTA and NFS.

In today's blog post we're going to discuss something quite intriguing in the game world. We're talking about how music and sounds influence gaming.

This is more like my contribution to the development of games on Hive like our very own WOO, Rising Star, Splinterlands, Terracore and all others.

I can never forget the famous GTA intro beat that starts the game. The sound is even used as a TikTok trend now with people acting and moving as if they were NPCs. I don't know if you've gotten the chance to see one of those videos, it's really funny.

Music really plays an epic role in making games more fun and engaging.

I'll break it down into subtopics and briefly discuss each role of music in video games.

Setting the Game Mood

Now I want you to just picture yourself in a video game where you're exploring a post-apocalyptic world just like the Terracore game.

The place feels desolate and very empty obviously. Then, out of nowhere, you suddenly hear a spooky, eerie tune playing in the background.

It makes you feel like you're really in that world, right?

That's exactly how music and sound in video games help create the atmosphere. I remember years back playing this horror video game of infected monsters and zombies. The game is called "The Suffering".

It had this dark theme and zombies could attack you from anywhere. What got me really scared playing the game is the heart beat sound that starts playing when you're getting closer to serious danger or zombies are approaching.

The music and the sounds in games create the same feeling and atmosphere that music and sounds create in movies.

Besides the animation graphics, one thing that attracts children to play kid's games is the music playing in the background.

I also remember when my youngest sibling was around 4 years old. There was this old game I had on my phone. The moment I start the game, my little sister will rush from her room and quickly come to join me. 😂 It was literally how I was able to call her.

The music really makes you feel like you're part of the story.

Think of the Fallout games, Fallout 76: Steel Reign, Fallout 76: Wastelanders and the other fallout series. Their music captures the feeling of surviving in a ruined world perfectly.

Emotional Resonance

One reason I love playing GTA so much is the chance to live the luxury life and drive those expensive sports cars. The feeling I get from playing GTA is very close to the feeling people have owning new things in real life. When I earn cash from completing a mission, the sound that plays was always making me feel like I'm actually rich😂.

Video game music can make you feel all sorts of emotions. Another classic example is The Legend of Zelda.

The music in those games can make you happy, sad, or even scared. When you hear the "Song of Storms" or "Zelda's Lullaby," it's not just some background noise, it's making me feel very connected to the game's world and the characters involved.

It adds an emotional touch that you will definitely remember long after you've finished playing. The music is actually why some people never forget certain old classic games.

For example super Mario game when it's getting close to boss level 😁.

Dynamic Gameplay

Sometimes, the music in a game changes based on what you're doing. You could be playing an awesome action game and when you suddenly hit boss level the game music changes.

Like the game I described earlier, "The suffering" I'm able to tell when more zombies are getting close with the heart beat sounds that the game makes.

All these sound and music changes play a major role in creating an awesome and thrilling gaming experience.

Now Imagine playing a fast-paced shooting game like DOOM, whether it's Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods or Mighty Doom.

When you're busy battling hordes of demons, the music gets loud and intense, which matches the action.

This always makes me feel like I'm right in the middle of the action. It's like the music is responding to your actions, making the game even more exciting.

I hope the game developers I taking notes 😂. I'll be building my own games in the future anyways so it's cool to already know how players feel.

Navigation and Clues

The sound isn't just about music or to set the gaming mood but it can also give you hints in the game. For instance I don't know if you've played Alien Shooter before.

You have a soldier in a lab which has been invaded by aliens. You go through each level by shooting all the aliens in the lab. When you're moving in a region where there are no aliens it's mostly quite and the only thing you hear is the foot steps of your character.

However when the aliens start approaching, this very epic vigorous music starts playing notifying you that it's game on and time to kill some aliens. 🧟🧟‍♀️🧟‍♂️

The game is in a way using sounds to guide you and that usually makes you feel like you're really exploring this dangerous game world.

Creating Memorable Gaming Moments

I already mentioned in my preceding paragraphs of how I may never forget the GTA intro music that plays with the Rockstar logo.

Also in GTA 4, after "Niko Bellic" the main character completes a mission there is a sound bite that plays which I can't forget even after about 3 years of not playing the game.

I really have to go find that GTA 4 CD🤔

The point I'm trying to make is that some of the most unforgettable moments in video games are tied to their music and sound.

Now here's one I hope you could remember, Think about the epic boss fight in Final Fantasy VII with "One-Winged Angel" playing.😈

These moments become iconic because of the music. It's like the music becomes a part of the story and sticks with you forever.

Indeed, music plays a major role in defining the experience we'll have in the games. I apologize if I used game examples that you may not before familiar with. No matter the game you play, it's a universal truth that the music or sound in the game creates an extra excitement for players.

I'll end today's blog post right here. Wouldn't want to talk too much because I'm pretty sure I'm just wetting your appetite to go grab your favorite game and play some WOOgame or Splinterlands.

I hope you enjoyed this blog. As always I'll be very excited to respond to any comment or even a question you may have regarding today's blog topics.
