How Our Brain Encodes Music | Rising Star Giveaway - Reward 15000 Starbits (Ends 22 February UTC)

Music has been in our lives for tens of thousands of years and has been at the center of almost all cultures, but how our brain perceives music continues to be a matter of great curiosity. Many studies have found that music has many benefits to human life, and a lot of research is still being done on this subject, and in addition to finding the benefits of music, scientists are also investigating why it is so beneficial.

Researchers at the University of California San Francisco studied how the brain processes melodies by creating a detailed map of human auditory cortex activity when someone hears a melody.

The researchers recorded high-intensity neurophysiological activity directly from the human auditory cortex while participants listened to Western music phrases. Pitch, pitch change, and expectation were selectively encoded in different cortical regions, indicating a spatial map representing different melodic dimensions. The same participants listened to spoken English, and the researchers compared responses to music and speech.

Melodic pitch, pitch-change, and expectation modulate STG (superior temporal gyrus) activity during music listening.

Although a lot of data is obtained in the research, it reveals that our brain does two things at the same time while listening to music.

Cortical regions selective for music-encoded expectation, while regions encoding pitch and pitch change in music used the same neural code to represent equivalent features of speech. That is, the findings reveal how melody perception recruits both music-specific and general-purpose sound representations.

If you have time, I recommend you take a look at the entire research, Link to the research..

This type of research is really important and I like to see such research. Although it is difficult to obtain clear results in the short term, I believe that they will obtain much more detailed results in the future. I have always been curious about the complex response of our brain to music, and I believe that such research will both satisfy our curiosity and open ways to discover the emotional and therapeutic impacts of music. Many studies reveal the benefits of music, so this type of research is also very important, they will help us learn why it is beneficial and whether it has more benefits.

Enjoy the music and stay with Love.

Question of the Day : What do you think of the above research? If you don't have an answer to this question, You can talk about your favorite song or anything related to music in your comment.

Count me in please. I didn't really understand the research. Yes, the brain does things when we listen to music. Or to people talking. Or the sound of rain, or a passing train, a barking dog, a gaggle of kids playing in the back yard... but what it does changes depending on how we subjectively judge the sounds we hear. Do you like the music or not, does the barking dog annoy you or pleasantly remind you of a puppy you had as a kid and so on? Also, the same sounds evoke different responses depending on the situation - Lady Gaga at full blast might be ok after a few beer at the pub but I don't enjoy it for breakfast, and barking dogs makes me nervous in the middle of the night though I just wish they'd shut up if they bark in the daytime.

thanks

@henruc

Understanding how the brain perceives and processes music is a complex and ongoing area of research. Studies like these contribute to our understanding of how music is represented and processed in the brain, and how it may differ from the processing of other auditory stimuli like speech.

Congratulations @dewabrata! Count me in for another round, please! Thank you so very much!

This sort of research makes sense to me, and falls right in line with my perspective on the importance of music to humanity. We are a musical species, with an ability to apprehend and understand music in a similar way to how to understand language. Fascinting stuff indeed. 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

I don't really understand it as much but anything is possible. We still haven't figured out everything in the human brain just yet.

The research involving the music on the brain is really interesting

Your document is very general, I think it lacks some clarity, actually I believe that music forms stimuli that our brain recognizes, but I think your information is incomplete.
