SMTs are an expansion of the same idea. @leofinance has proven that everyone who thought SMTs as the thing that would take STEEM/HIVE to the next level were 100% right all along. Without the HIVE-Engine tokens and everything associated with them, HIVE wouldn't be quarter the blockchain it is today.
