The curious case of 'Clash of Clans' and my progress after 6+ years!

In early 2017, I got introduced to a mobile game called the Clash of Clans. All my friends seemed to be playing it so naturally I downloaded it too. Little did I know this game is going to take a lot of hours from my life. xD

I played it religiously for about 2 years until I got bored like all my friends and uninstalled the game. We had new games to play like PUBG and Mini Militia. But somewhere I was missing the game, the urge to upgrade my Barbarian king to the next level so its stats can improve ever so slightly was powerful. I succumbed to it and reinstalled the game.

I went on to reach town halls 10, and 11 and moved on to reach now townhall level 14. It used to be a max of town hall 9 or 10 but Supercell, the game developers continued to bring more updates and now we are up to town hall 15 with a new town hall going to be released soon.

Occasionally, I open up the game and play a few battles and close it. I don't participate in any clan wars nor do I have the time for it. Here is my base which I haven't updated since my last townhall upgrade. All the new buildings and walls were left at a side.

I do actively try to keep my Laboratory running which is the hardest task for me. I have to collect a lot of resources but the upgrade time for troops and spells are like 10-15 days so it is not difficult to collect a significant amount of resources in that time.

Most of my elixir troops upgrades are done for the town hall level but the upgrades with dark elixir are the toughest. Dark elixir is a rare resource and is used to upgrade not only dark-elixir troops but Heroes and their pets too. So, there is always a shortage of dark elixir for me. It won't be a problem for someone actively playing the game but for an occasional player like me I am always running on fumes...lol

Took me more than 6 years of on and off playing to get me here. The first battle I did was on 7th Feb 2017 and I have won almost 10,000 multiplayer battles till now. Completed most of the achievements with just a few remaining. Fully upgraded the 'builder base' till the last update.

This has to be one of the Grind-iest games with upgrades times of a building like 10-20 real-life days. It just forces you to spend your money on the game but I haven't spent a penny till now on this game. In this journey, I managed to collect more than 13K gems as well.

Naturally, I collected a lot of 'magic items' along the way. These were introduced long after I started to play the game and they keep adding some new items to the list.

Just a Cash Grab now

At some point, they felt like one base is not enough and added another base, called the 'Builder Base'. This was considered to be the meta-changing thing back then but it failed miserably and Supercell didn't focus on their Builder base for years.

But they just had a significant update and added yet another base to the game. Well, they were adding new stuff just to extract money from all those players who can't let their buildings not be fully upgraded. I don't even follow the updates now and just stuck to the main 'village base' only.

I remember a time when I was so impressed with the game and addicted to it that I actually went to the Play Store to rate it with 5 stars and even added a review! I don't think I have ever written a review of any other game. Maybe one more but I have to check it.

I don't stand by that statement now and I think Chess is the best strategy game/sport on the planet not Clash of Clan. LOL

In Hindsight, I have wasted a lot of time grinding this stupid little game but the progression felt so good that I never really left the game. Now I play it just to remember those times when all of my friends used to discuss clan war strategies and were active in the game. I think those memories are what keeps me glued to the game.
