New DLC - Yukon Valley Nature Reserve | theHunter: Call of the Wild

avatar

Hello, gamers. Welcome back to my blog.

If you follow my posts then you must know I am a big fan of this hunting game called theHunter: Call of the Wild. I never knew I would enjoy a hunting game like I do. Why I love its rich and diverse choice of maps/reserves in the game.

I don't usually buy many DLCs in a game but this game is something different. I saw an ongoing sale on Steam and massive discounts on DLC so I bought a few. One of those was the new reserve map of Yukon Valley Nature Reserve.

Located in the Yukon River basin in Alaska. It is very rich in flora and fauna, containing a good population of predators like the mighty Grizzlies and Grey Wolves. I was excited to find and hunt all of them.

When I launched the reserve, it showed a cutscene of me landing on the reserve while the Warden of the reserve, Jim Murray was briefing me about the place on the radio. There were snow-clad mountains on the backdrop and a dense forest covering the plains.

I could see a watch tower in front of me and my instruction was to climb the tower and explore the area from the top. Also, I had to make sure there is no piece of food left or it will attract bears unnecessarily.

As I was climbing up the stairs of the tower. I was keeping an eye on the surrounding as well. There were no animals nearby but on the far northern side on the banks of the river I could see a new species, the "Caribou".

The warden briefed me about them and this is all new to me, I have never been to Alaska or North America for that matter and this game just sparks my curiosity to go and explore these wild places. Maybe one day 🤞

You can read more information about any species from the Codex menu. I opened it and read more about them. All about their behaviour and senses. Turns out they have an excellent sense of smell. So, I need to be watchful of the wind direction.

They migrate and travel thousands of kilometres. Damm, I didn't know that either. What an impressive species!!

I came down the tower and was asked to go to the nearby lodge to settle down. When I was going towards that, I came across a carcass and upon examining it found out that it was the need zone of a Grizzly Bear. Damm! Never thought I would see signs of Grizzly so early in the game.

I will come back later within the timeframe and see if I can find and hunt one of the biggest bears. Super exciting!

I saw the cabin and went and unlocked it. So, I can now use the store and rest here to skip the time of the day. This also works as a quick travel point in this huge map. This was part of my objectives in the first mission "Welcome to Alaska".

My next objective was to check on the dustbins and see if they are properly shut so they won't attract the Bears. One of the lids was open and I shut it down. This was the first mission, just exploring the landscape and making the outpost secure.

Now, I used the store to see if there are some callers for that Reindeer Caribou. Luckily, I found one and I had enough cash as well so I bought one. These have a range of 200 meters only but it still is worth it. I can hide in the shrubs and call out and hopefully one of them comes to investigate the call.

That is not the quickest way but it sure does work.

Now that I was all set up, I went out to explore more. I searched all around the river banks to see if I can find some wildlife. I even brought my dog along with me in case I need to track down an injured animal.

After looking around for some time, I came across one of the smallest species in the region. The Harlequin Duck, these ducks can be found near water bodies and they remain active throughout the day.

This one was well over 200 meters away and being a small target, it was not easy to hit from this distance. I anyway went for it and missed the shot and you don't get a second chance with ducks. I was a bit impatient with this one, I could have easily got closer but sometimes it happens. You will lose patience and lose the hunt as well.

I was still exploring and came across an unfinished hunting structure, so I spent some bucks and built it. This was a small hut near the water which can conceal me from the birds and animals. There were no animals nearby so I left the place to look for more spots where I can set up a hunting stand. All of these will help me in future and make my life very easy but it takes a while to go and find prime hunting locations.

I found some bear tracks going west side, it looks like I might have spooked it accidentally and the bear ran away or perhaps they got my scent and decided to flee.

While I was walking through a dense forest, I heard some warning calls from a Moose. It was loud and clear so I just snuck and remained silent and slowly approach.

I could see through the leaves of trees, a relatively small female Moose standing still and trying to listen to the sounds of oncoming danger. They have good sense of hearing and smell, but not so much as clear and distant vision.

They have a big bulging part under the neck that can be used as a good indicator of the placement of the heart. So, a heart shot on moose is not that difficult. I also aimed there and got the heart shot. It instantly drops the animal.

I reached another outpost and unlocked that as well. So, I have two outposts now where I can easily travel between. Although I didn't find many animals on my first adventure, the landscape is just beautiful.

Can't wait to play more and hunt all the species in this reserve. I have not seen any clues of grey Wolf till now but I will search for them later, especially during the night as they are very active during that time.

Thanks for reading...

Until next time...

It's cool that these games exist for people that have an interest in hunting. I would probably be bored to death in a game like this.

I never liked hunting games but Far Cry Primal had some interesting hunting mechanics and I loved that game so I looked for a proper hunting game and this was highly recommended.

It is way different than some people like to play. All action and something happening every second in the game but this is weirdly relaxing and not as boring as I thought it is going to be. Also, the progression in the game is well done and it makes me fire this again and again.

That's so cool. This is not an easy game at first. Just try to be patient with it and it will grow on you.

Maybe we can play it online sometime?

I actually got my hunter's license recently, but haven't been on an actual hunt yet. Perhaps this could be good for preparation. At least for the mood.

Game looks very interesting, and I like your presentation of it. Hadn't heard of it before now.

Congrats on your hunter's license. So, how does it work? Can you now hunt some specific animals (perhaps marked on your license) or anything that is allowed in the particular area? Hunting is illegal here in India, hence I have no idea how does it work.

Btw, I just checked and this game is going on sale in Epicgames store and they are giving it out for free until 29th. It inclued a few maps that comes with the base game so you can grab the game for yourself. Here is the link. https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/thehunter-call-of-the-wild

Just add it in your library so you can play it later. Maybe we can have an online session at some point.

I apologize for the late response. It's been a crazy couple of days.. First off thanks for the game link – I got myself a free copy! I'd never have found that if you hadn't told me about it.

Thanks for the congratulatulation. In Norway it's prohibited to hunt any animal unless the law specifically states that the particular species can be hunted. When you get a hunter's license, one of the things you must go through (and pass an exam for) are which animals you're allowed to hunt and when. In other words it's a general hunting license for all animals that are legal to hunt, like moose, deer, various birds, rabbits and boars. We also have wolves and bears, but you are not allowed to hunt those without a special grant by the state, and only in cases where the animals are causing damage to humans or property.

I'd love to try out the game online sometime. But first I need to find some time to sit down and install it. Either way, I'll try to reach out before long.
