Found a massive Moose and campaign update in Yukon Valley | theHunter: Call of the Wild

Hello, gamers. Welcome back to my blog.

I am in the middle of Yukon Valley Nature Reserve and trying to find out all the different species and hunt each one down. I have not been very successful so far.

I only managed to hunt down Caribou, Bison and Moose so far. Still, many species are left to discover and hunt, especially the predators like grey wolves and mighty grizzlies. While I do that, I am also looking forward to doing some story missions and seeing what the main campaign has to offer on this DLC.

My day started with coming across a herd of Caribou. It was their drinking time and they were standing on the edge of this small river and trying to have a peaceful time but it was not going to be peaceful. Sorry, not sorry!

I shot the biggest male from the group and everyone else just fled from the area. I waited for them to get back and decided to walk along the shore and see if I can find more groups or other animals drinking at this time.

I was in a prime hunting location with a wide view in front of me. There was naturally an unfinished hunting structure there as well. So, I finished the structure and got inside.

From the inside I spotted a lonely male Caribou, he was a level 3 with a long set of antlers. I had to take it down. But he was standing facing away from me and I had no good shot from this angle. Shooting at the hips or back will result in missing the 'vital organ' harvest check and I didn't want to lose those precious XP points and cash.

I waited for him to turn around. After waiting for some time I just made some noise by running and that alerted him. It made him uneasy but this was my chance. I capitalised on this opportunity and got a lung shot.

Later I went and harvest both of my kills. I could cross the river from where the water was too shallow. It was almost like a small stream. Anyways, the weather was quite pleasant at this time with a clear sky and no sign of rain or snow.... perfect hunting weather.

Tracking the first one was not easy, I somehow missed the lungs (which I thought I had hit) but my bullet dropped way down than I expected and just hit the flesh, missing everything. My dog had to track him down and it took ages. We tracked him for about 2.7 km. I knew he died because I could see the hunting pressure on my map.

If I had known it would take us this long, I would have not bothered to harvest it...lol.

The second was silver and had an impressive set of antlers. Weighing over 160 Kg it was a massive one. I manage to hit the left lung and it didn't take long for him to go down.

These kills levelled me up and I had a skill point to spare now. I spent it on the 'Scent Tinkerer' as I want to use the scent (in future) to attract animals to me while I remain hidden in a hunting stand or under a tree.

This will also help me when I eventually have to improve my bow score and shoot with bows... then I need to attract animals and take those close-range bow shots.

Enough hunting, for now, I want to focus on the missions as well. My first mission was just to locate and unlock an outpost. But my current mission was to go to the other outpost and see if everything is in check.

I also had to check on the beetle infestation which has been spreading in the forest lately.

I reached the other outpost and picked up a bag as directed by the warden. He wanted me to go out and find a fallen spruce tree nearby and see if there is a beetle infestation on that.

I looked around and saw a couple of trees, one of them was normal with no clue of infestation. But the other one was not. This is not good, these beetles can destroy an entire forest.

I had to mark the surrounding trees with a big cross to indicate that they were at risk and that they will be taken care of by the other team who is keeping an eye on this problem.

The warden also told me that they were trying to cope with this beetle infestation for a month now and they even used some pesticides. But now they are worried that the pesticides might damage the delicate ecosystem of this place. To ensure that nothing is affected I had to go to a nearby swamp area and collect some water samples.

While I was going to my marked location to collect the water samples, I spotted a beautiful moose. This was a big male, the biggest one I have ever seen in the region. I slowly got closer and when I was at about 150 meters (I was taking no chances...lol), I took the shot.

A perfect right lung shot from my .300 magnum was more than enough for this mighty creature. I even took a photo of him with my dog so you can see the comparison. He was huge with beautiful antlers. No doubt, it was a gold one.

Later I found a big Caribou as well. These are not as big as Moose but still impressive. You can see that my dog is not looking like a little puppy in front of this one.

I collected the water sample from two different sources and also collected the dropping of animals so they can see if the pesticides have entered the food chain or not. This was a successful session with some great kills and a new mission completed.

Now I have unlocked some side missions as well.

Thanks for reading...

Until next time...
