ONBOARDING STRATEGY FOR HIVE

Hive is a unique blockchain with amazing features and an active community of users, stakeholders and developers. However, the blockchain has struggled to get recognition in the Web 3 space. There are several narratives as to why the blockchain hasn’t had its breakthrough moment despite several promotional efforts and breakthrough innovations in the crypto industry.

I would like to say that advertising/marketing isn’t a one-time thing. It is part of the culture of an organisation/group and continuous throughout the lifespan of that organisation and the same applies to Hive (and Hive dapps). Hive needs to continue its various marketing campaigns.

It is also important that during this conversation we agree that there isn’t a one-side-fit-all solution to the challenge of promoting Hive as we often get into the squabble about how best to promote the chain. The important thing here is finding methods that work and improving on the things we aren’t doing. In this post, I will highlight two key things Hive can do to improve the onboarding process.

SIMPLIFYING THE ONBOARDING PROCESS

As one of the speakers during the Hivefest pointed out yesterday, explaining Hive to the average person is quite difficult considering the technicality of using the blockchain. This is an issue that we need to resolve and over the years we have come up with innovations to make the user experience more enjoyable and easy to grasp. Nevertheless, there is still more we can do.

To begin with, I strongly recommend implementing a user-friendly onboarding program/course that guides new users through the Hive ecosystem. The program should be designed with visually appealing features. It must also be concise and easy-to-understand content to ensure that new users remain engaged. Additionally, a reward system should be incorporated into the onboarding process to compensate for the challenges associated with learning how to use the Hive blockchain. There are many iterations of this idea in the Web 3 space:

These are all efforts geared towards helping new users acclimatise with the Web 3 project’s ecosystem through simple tasks. These tasks are also tied to rewards that serve as incentives for users to engage.

This program can also be a useful tool to get feedback and information from prospective users which can be useful in designing future campaigns. It is important that we use data to improve the ecosystem rather than relying on the ingenuity of developers.

MAKING SELF-CUSTODY OPTION

The world is not ready for self-custody. One of the issues with crypto is that it is lightyears ahead of Web 2 and this is a good thing. However, it poses some difficulties for the average person who is not familiar with concepts like account ownership and self-custody especially in the digital domain. For these people, self-custody is too much of a burden to bear they would rather delegate this responsibility to a trusted and centralised authority which is against the ethos of decentralisation and blockchain technology.

Nevertheless, It is important to meet people halfway and gradually introduce them to the inner workings of cryptocurrency. For Hive, this will entail third-party apps like Hive Keychain and Hivesigner providing custodial services like key-management features. They already provide these services, a nice addition to their list of services would be account recovery system, which eliminates the risk of losing an account completely.

Now, I understand this comes with a lot of risk but I believe many people are willing to take this option and will eventually opt out once they grow their account and understand the risk of custodial keys management. The important thing here is that people get to choose how they interact with the blockchain.

CONCLUSION

I believe the ideas mentioned in this post will help improve the onboarding process which is crucial to onboarding the masses. This is the first step in solving some of the important problems on Hive.

In my follow-up post, I will discuss extensively user retention. If you would like to follow up on this discussion kindly follow my page. Also, if you found this post valuable kindly reblog so more people can join in the conversation. Thank you.

Onboarding could be said to be the greatest challenge #hive is facing, our developers are trying and I hope they will continue to find easier ways we can use to bring people on board and get them active.
