Removal of fuel subsidies in my country and its impact on market prices

It's been two weeks since the new president of Nigeria declared the removal of subsidies on gasoline. The current price of fuel per liter is now #488, which is almost three times the old price of #185 per liter. This current hike in the price of fuel has literally affected the cost of transportation, food, and other commodities you can think of. The masses have not been finding it funny, as little movement with buses attracts big money. Some schools are already adjusting bills and sending memos here and there. There have been a lot of changes, which are putting many Nigerians under a lot of financial pressure. Well, we are facing reality even as an oil-producing country, but hopefully we will still find a way to survive the whole drama. As for me, I no longer bike anyhow for short movements; I trek with my two legs to cut down on expenses😉.

So this evening, I visited the market, and it seems as if the market prices change hourly. I had planned to get a lot of fruits, but the prices became so much higher than last week.

This is a native pear, which costs a dollar per share.

Before now, I could buy this same size for half a dollar.I moved to Garden Egg, and it seems the price now is double the old price.

Apples, fruits, and watermelon is a must for me to buy, despite how they keep the price so high.

All these additional prices were due to the high cost of transportation as a result of the fuel subsidy removal. The marketer has to add money in order to see a profit after sales.

What I did was cut down on the quantities I usually buy.

When I was done with my fruit shopping, I needed to prepare rice for my family and me. Fresh tomatoes are so costly nowadays. I couldn't believe how tiny $3 worth of tomatoes are.

The one tied in black nylon is the one I bought for $3.
Moving on to other ingredients I needed, it was as if I should quit the shopping. I really hope that something should be done, at least to accommodate the low-class families.

This plantain cost 1 and 1/2 dollars. I guess this is not the time for plantains, but even at that, it's way more expensive than how we used to buy them before now, however fish seems to retain its old price for now.

Overall,my experience in the market wasn't really what I expected. I exceeded my budget even when I tried to maintain my lists. Surviving in this current economy really needs deeper thinking and calculations, and then more hustle to meet up; hopefully all will be fine soon.

Thanks for reading!!!

Thank you for being part of #MarketFriday this week! It is always such a pleasure to have you. As you can see, I am running more than late here this week. For this, I'm so sorry. While I have read your market post (I have read them all!) I had some unexpected surgery that has me unable to finish most of them. While I am fine, the swelling, bruising, and healing have slowed me just a bit. I'll be good soon. Quite miserable until then!

I am happy to have read them all pf the posts and able to send out the upvotes. A partial win for me!
I truly appreciate all of the sharing of experiences and even more, when people visit others, starting a dialogue. This is what the vision of #MarketFriday was. The understanding for all.

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can benefit a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you; it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.

Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday

Inflation is Nigeria is getting too much, everything has skyrocketed, crazy thing is that whatever goes up doesn’t come down again, everybody starts using it as an advantage to make extra profit😌

we've had so many fuel hikes here in SA it's sickening. Also considering that most of what we pay is not for the fuel at all, but for taxes and levies? It's enough to make your stomach turn. Of course, each increase pushes the price of literally everything up. :( I feel your pain

It's the best way to reduce our expenses. It seems we need to go back to our past times. Inflation striking us so hard that It's impossible to ignore it.
Your idea to cope up with it is good.
