My recent shopping lifestyle || See what I discovered

20230729_151220_0000.png

I sat down one day to really look into my shopping lifestyle, and then I discovered that the poor actually spend more while purchasing certain things because they do not have the financial capacity to buy things in bulk. I also discovered that even some rich men, or, let's say, average men (financially), do not take the advantage of paying less by buying in bulk with the "must" needed items at home.

When I lived with one of my uncles as a teenage girl, I observed how he visited the market by himself every evening after returning from work to buy food and ingredients for dinner. Sometimes, he sends me to get salt, onions, pepper, etc. in a very small quantity, just the quantity for a meal preparation. To me, I found it stressful, and on different occasions, I had the urge to tell him to buy the family's basic needs in bulk and avoid stressing my life every evening. I didn't even see it then that he spends more by buying in bits; I only saw that he is stressing my dear life, but I wasn't brave enough to tell him a word then. Bad enough, he still practises that method of buying in bits according to his wife instead of getting things in bulk despite the huge salary he receives monthly, while the smart rich ones take advantage of buying in bulk and saving costs for themselves.

Recently, I made it a point of duty to always get my family's basic needs, such as food, ingredients, and other essentials, in bulk, especially with the current inflation in our country. Food has become my top priority, and even when my husband cannot get some needed things in bulk for us, I lay aside my other needs and ensure to get them available instead of buying them in bits. This particular shopping culture has saved me a lot of money recently. Last two weeks, I bought a half bag of rice for #17,000, but today, the same quantity is sold for #21,000. Now the people buying in smaller sizes get it at an increased price. Looking at my action two weeks ago, I feel proud of it considering how much I have already saved. Now, not everyone can afford to buy in large quantities and save money like this, but it's always better when we discover ways to reduce costs and go by them if we can.

Quality over Quantity

Again, I have come to discover that not all expensive items are really of good quality. In the past, I used to feel that once an item was expensive, quality was guaranteed, but that has totally changed with my experience and from other people's reviews. That being said, I consider quality and durable products when shopping, irrespective of the cost. Nowadays, there are lots of inferior products in the market that are being packaged and sold for the price of a quality one, and these days, I do ensure that I don't just assume that because it is expensive, it must be of good quality. To me, buying quantity over quality is penny-wise, pound-foolish because you will end up spending double at the end of the day. It's wiser to go with one quality product rather than three inferior products; I also had a bitter experience with this in the past.

I would rather wait to have enough money to pay for quality products and be satisfied using them.

Thanks for your time in my blog!!

Bulk purchase is a family tradition for me but there are times when I usually don't have enough for that and going out to buy in pieces makes me see the difference.

Buying in bulk pays a lot, those little pennies you save when gathered together become huge in the end.

A lot of Nigerians believe that expensive things means quality but that's not the case. Thanks for sharing these shopping tips with us.

Exactly and seeing the difference sometimes can be painful but we won't have choice but to bear it until we can afford bulk buying again

That mentality is no longer my case now, I know better
Thanks for reading through George 👌👍

Ohhh, the last time I bought half bag of rice it was for 19,000 naira. I also love buying things in bulk because it saves me lot of money and time. Imagine it rained heavily today and I didn't bother to go out because I have everything I need at home.

Thanks for sharing ma'am, A survey showed the inflation rate in Nigeria has risen from 18 % ( which was in 2022) to over 21%, So it's advisable you buy your needs in bulk now due to increase in prices

It's really an advantage to buy in bulk. You are able to save more. But many can't buy it because of limited resources. In my case I usually buy things which would last at least half of the month

Yea, many cannot afford it . It's good that you buy the ones that can last up to half a month 👌✅

That is a good strategy. Bulk items are often cheaper and they are usually the necessities which will be used. Buying quality items is also better than cheap items. It pays off long term because the quality item will most likely have a longer lifespan.

Buying in bulk not only saves money, becouse the actual item is cheaper, but you save time this way as well.

About quality items - my Dad was always saying 'a poor person cannot afford to buy cheap things' - which basically means that spending should be well considered, and better to save money and buy something later on, than buy now - cheap(low quality) stuff:)

Nice, well thought article 🙌

At the end, a good quantity with good quality is the best. Buying goods in bulk really saves money, plenty people don't just know it. I got understand from my mom that when you buy goods in bulk, there is always a discount. Those buying in pieces end up making the vendors rich because there's always addition made on pieces so that profit can be gained.

That's nothing but the truth, As a student whenever I'm going to school I do buy some if the things I need in bulk, but when I finish my food and I'm trying to manage the money me, I buy the little things I want to cook at that moment, but when I calculate everything in a week, it's on high side, but I don't have any choice because I don't have enough at that moment... Same thing applicable to others, Some people don't have the money to buy in bulk but have to for what they have...Like I need to make this money, I don't want to be poor...lol

It's nice reading your article, I came across your post via #dreemport.
