TTT - A Slave To Money and Then You Die

Hello Hive Music Lovers!,

Welcome to another #threetunetuesday created originally by @ablaze.

This week we listen to probably one of the most popular and best songs of all time as I pick 3 tunes from the mighty The Verve.

But first, for those unfamiliar with TTT or Three Tune Tuesday.... to quote @ablaze :

The jist is as follows
Every Tuesday I'm going to share 3 songs which I like to listen to and I invite your feedback in the comments below. Better still, why not have a blast of your own Three Tune Tuesday and mention me in the post and I'll come and find the post and upvote it. If you could also use #threetunetuesday tag that would be great, as that is what I use when sifting through all the entries every Wednesday. It'll be a sweet way for us all to discover new music. You'll also be in with a chance of winning the prize.

The first song from the legendary and awesome Richard Ashcroft at his best is Bitter Sweet Symphony. This is a hugely popular song and for good reason I think. Here at Glasto in 2008 I think he makes the best live performance that I have seen him make of it. I think he was on fire this year.

I like how we can relate to the lyrics and that they have some meaning that many songs these days don't have. Life is a struggle and if you have ever worked for a boss that you have despised, then you know how that feels. It does feel that we are slave to money and then we die.

I have luckily had mostly good bosses, but have had a few who have been a nightmare and the thought of work on a Monday morning was a killing me and I would prefer to have gone oh fuck it!! Although I have done that with a few jobs when I was younger, there were a few times I couldn't just do that so easily.

I have seen in an interview, it could have been an old one at sometime that Richard had released a new album and I saw in the interview he was asked, why now? Why release the album now? His answer was, because its ready.

I think my next pick would be Lucky Man that you can see was another great live performance that he did at Glasto that same year. I think he really peaked in 2008.

Going from A Slave To Money and Then You Die to being a Lucky Man. I think this song has an Oasis sound to it and really shows The Verve to be one of the all time greats. It particularly reminds me of The Masterplan by Oasis.

The final tune is also a live performance from Glasto in 2008 - The Drugs Don't Work. A pretty emotional performance which just somehow stays with you.

Do the meaning of the lyrics mean for someone getting a treatment but the drugs are not working or that someone who has been taking a lot of party drugs and now cannot get the same effect anymore?

Whatever the meaning, it is a cracking tune. When thinking of Richard Ashcroft, you may always think of him with his trademark long hair and glasses style. You can see him with his hair short like in some of his more recent songs here.

That wraps up my #ttt for this week. What have you been listening to?

The winner from last week's 5 LEN token giveaway was @tahastories1 . Congratulations!

I would go to see them live, but there could be a wall of death there or something 😀

Wall of death is mandatory. My last concert some years ago brought my some rib pain for some weeks. 😆 But the Korn concert was awesome besides that.

Like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown is my favourite line from "Drugs Don't work".
Very beautiful, deep and sad.
It's my favorite in three of them.
Thank you so much for the reward.

An intresting choice to display, and a subject to talk about.

'Bittersweet...' is magnificent, I fall in love momentarily as I watched the video, I'd rather put it in my top-100 musical videos, for many reasons... soon after that I bought their 'Northern songs' LP and was disenchanted, finding there nothing except boring songs :P that was my personal experience with it...

Oh, and you forgot to mention the suing story behind the authorship of said song. #source

In the end, The Verve had to forfeit all songwriting royalties for Bitter Sweet Symphony and publishing rights to ABKCO, with Jagger and Richards added to the songwriting credits, and Ashcroft losing composer credits.

It's amazing what people are capable of when they smell big money... surround you like sharks drawn to blood.

ps. My bosses experience was almost pure negative, in one way or another. Perhaps I had to change my jobs at a better temp, to find a better ones 😁 Cant really say which one was worse. Perhaps back in 2003, there was one your child-free b....ch, who could make you believe that black is white and white is black, she had totally double and triple standards and was smiling and slippery like an eel. The job was good, but I could not stand the non-stop submission and lying, and left ... Also I had a job, in a printing house, which I held on I think, for 7 or 8 years, I don’t remember exactly. Eventually I left that job, and I well remember that I perceived the Exodus as "a slave being released from the galley." The last couple of years that I worked there, I had a way of "reconciling" (or, if you like, balancing) myself with the degree of craziness and chaos around: I would turn on one certain song, and turn the knob louder; this song 'Suicide' by Tiger Lillies - and it fully describes that job of mine, hehe.

Probably, it is necessary to tell about it separately, not in the comment section. That may be a funny topic: music for your office... !DHEDGE & !BEER

That was a pretty bad experience for The Verve, it was quite crazy to give those writing credits when they weren't due imo. The whole copyright thing is crazyy, on the one hand I can understand protecting your property, but how far should it go? Also it can last 100 years which seems long.

I can understand how you would feel about The Verve as once you peel back their main hits, there is not more of those songs that you could enjoy and take you on a journey like with other artists. There was a lot of potential there though I think. The main theme I had thought of today was not originally going to be about just The Verve, but I thought they and the other artist probably deserve their own post.

I totally feel you about having some crazy bosses. I do find that with men if you don't work well together, you can usually still get along and things can be amicable, but women bosses can twist the knot pretty well and you are better off to leave pronto! I have had many positions where it has felt like Stir Crazy, but things seem to have gotten better with age, or I have got accustomed to my enslavement! haha

accustomed to enslavement, haha! I believe not this but the 1st option.
"women bosses can twist the knot pretty well and you are better off to leave pronto! " - exactly so. I left. I was rather young and not much experienced, now I am in the know you better dont wait but vote asap - just escaping the door towards the next job, as there are a lot to choose from, and 90% the next one would be better. well, experience come... with experience! ;=)

I've only ever heard the one song from The Verve. I was always impressed by the guys voice though. It is too bad that they didn't have a ton of success in the US beyond Bittersweet Symphony. I might have to check out more of their stuff in a little bit.

They have a few good tunes for sure, he does have a great voice. It feels they didnt achieve as much as they should have done.

For sure! The one song was really catchy and the lyrics were pretty clever. Especially the speaking part at the end.

Ah yes, a quality trip down memory lane here. That album was sheer quality and I listened to it a lot when it first came out and for a good while after. You must certainly picked the best three songs from the album too, good work my friend. Good shout going for the live versions from Glasto too.
