The Miami Winter Music Conference

Three Tune Tuesday-ttt (5).jpg

Hello Hive Music Lovers!,

Welcome to another #threetunetuesday created originally by @ablaze.

This week I have been checking back on some music from a not so well known festival called the Miami Winter Music Festival. This was a cosy dance festival that was hosted for people to enjoy some of that Ibiza flare but in the winter time. The great place to hold it was chosen Miami, in particular the old art deco district.

When the festival first started, it was quite small and held over a 2 or 3 days with afterparties in some of the best locations in Miami. Of course, many of the top DJs came over, released new tracks or mixes and everyone would hang out by the pool. It also seemed to get that American flamboyant style to it that you don't see in europe so much.

Here is a short video from 2009 by Axwell who coined the phrase, "I'm in Miami bitch". I was never at the festival or in Miami, but I did enjoy to listen to the live broadcasts from the festival.

Over the years from when it first started, it grew quite big and more popular. As you can see from the start of this video by Erik Morillo, Miami looks like a great holiday destination and a great place to visit like the baleric islands.

Many of the worlds top DJs have performed there including the awesome Moby. I haven't seen Moby perform live but do like many of his tracks, especially from the Bourne film.

The first tune is a track I remember hearing at the conference by Pete Tong. It is a remixed version of the great 80s tune Big Love by Fleetwood Mac. I am a big sucker for tunes from the 80s and also enjoy this speeded up version. House music was abit different back then and now it seems to metamorphasised into something else.

The second tune is a track by Steve Angello that he dropped at the festival back in 2006 I think it was and not the famous umbrella tune by Rihanna. It takes some time to build up, but it is another pretty good house track. Steve is a pretty big DJ and music producer from Greece. He has been around the scene for quite some time. I don't really follow any of his DJing or music, but remember him being at the WMC.

When the conference was first starting, during the day it comprised of many pool parties such as in some of the famous clubs like The Surfcomber Hotel. It is located in the art deco district in south beach Miami. This district was built in the 1920s and 30s and was restored some time ago now and looks like it is a trendy and hip place to hang out.

The final tune is from The Others, which is a dance mix from the rock band Dukes of Windsor. I also heard this one being played at the WMC.

Miami beach is also quite well known for the Scarface film that was also filmed in the art deco district and the Fontainbleau hotel that I saw has recently had Al Pacino there doing an anniversary event. If I was to visit Miami, I would want to check it out and the art deco district.

The WMC sadly no longer runs and isn't the cool small event that it started out as. It seems to have been superceded by the much larger Ultra Festival Miami which is on again next month and had 165k attendees according to their website. I don't know if they have afterparties or smaller pool parties as part of this festival too like in the WMC, but it looks a huge event. The tickets are also pretty pricey which seems par for the course for any big commercialised music event these days. Are they still worth to visit?

There is talk of reviving the WMC on the official website, but I think that probably won't happen and the larger Ultra festival is the main event that will stay in Miami's calendar going forward. But I still have some good memories listening to the previous conferences on the radio and on youtube when it was more a niche event.

I did see that Pete Tong has announced on youtube that he will be having a pool party next month in Miami again, but that seems like just an event and not a whole festival like it was previously.

That wraps up my #ttt for this week. I hope you are having a great musical Tuesday. Whats your favorite tune and what are you listening to this week?

For those unfamiliar with TTT or Three Tune Tuesday.... to quote @ablaze :

The jist is as follows
Every Tuesday I'm going to share 3 songs which I like to listen to and I invite your feedback in the comments below. Better still, why not have a blast of your own Three Tune Tuesday and mention me in the post and I'll come and find the post and upvote it. If you could also use #threetunetuesday tag that would be great, as that is what I use when sifting through all the entries every Wednesday. It'll be a sweet way for us all to discover new music. You'll also be in with a chance of winning the prize.

Be sure to head over and give @ablaze some support as without his great work, we wouldn't have a #ttt.

Yeah, I would certainly have enjoyed a few pool parties back in the day. Nice to see people without phones too! 😅

Awesome stuff! I have always wanted to get into electronic music a bit more. They have a big festival down near Detroit every year I think called electric forest. Mostly I'd love to be able to make my own, but the equipment is so expensive.

There is such a variety available now. I would like some equipment too, it looks really cool.

Sadly not, I usually saved as much as I could over the winter time so I had enough cash to go on holiday in the summer times!

I always loved WMC more than Ultra, although Ultra 2000 and 2001 were freaking lit! I got to play a pool party at WMC back in 2001 which was one of the best events I have ever played to this date! Got invited to do a back to back with DJ Fixx and Chris B back in like 2008 but couldn't make it due to some family reasons. Those were the days bro, those were the days, lol.

I've never heard of this festival, I only know of a few in Europe, but the rhythm of the dance is hypnotic, I would say.
