Photo Essay - Berlin

I am abit late, but Favourite City was the #edtopic from a couple of weeks ago, and I didn't get around to making my entry. However, there is no time like the present.

I think something, if not the main thing that makes a place great, is usually the company that you keep. Therefore, it doesn't usually matter where you go, but what company you keep.

With that in mind, I could show many photos of cities I have visited and they would mostly be party shots with many of the people I have hung around with. One city though, that I do have many fond memories from living there and also find that it has a lot to offer, is Berlin.

Berlin is a huge city spread out very wide, so it feels like it has lots of space. It is also very flat which is great for walking and cycling. Compared to visiting say Dresden which somehow feels very wavey with the many small hills.

Some of the things it has to offer is lots of culture such as the mueseum island that you can see here from when I went on the boat trip. I am not really a mueseum person, and this is about as close to the mueseums that I actually got when I lived there. Being a bit older now, I would more likely visit them now.

One of my favorite photos that I have taken in Berlin is here from the Siegessäule (Victory Column) looking east towards Alex (Alexander Platz). Mostly this was as far west as I went in Berlin as most of the action was happening in the center or east of Berlin.

Looking out to the west of Berlin towards Charlottenberg was not so interesting. But the great thing about Berlin is the relaxed atmosphere and great vibe there. When there is a party on, the whole city seems to come out and celebrate.

Over the summer months there are usually lots of free events to attend. I attended here the Loveparade back in the day. The most recent event is here to give you an idea how such an event looks like. Back then, Tiesto was the highlight of the show, playing once the sun went down from the Siegessäule, although Berlin is more known for its techno clubs, it was a great moment.

The parties would also often go on throughout the night and weekend. I found it a great friendly atmosphere and pretty safe for a capital city. The U and S Bahns started around 6 am, so you could either take the tram or nightbus back home or wait for the trains to start again. Sometimes it wouldn't even get dark in Berlin like you might know in some cities, so it would often be quite light in the early hours.

One thing you might think is missing from Berlin is that there is no beach or sea. It is miles away from the nearest coastline.

However, there are some nice beaches that you can easily reach with the S-Bahn at Wannsee in Potsdam. A great place to enjoy the day and cool off in the water.

Although it isn't quite the mediterranean, it is a great place to visit in the summer and there is also lots of nature around to explore.

Thanks for joining my photo essay today.

Thanks, I love the views over Tiergarten, the greenary contrasting with the city particularly. There are many old buildings that have been restored, but much of the city was destroyed very badly.

Thanks, I am feeling the same way. There are many places to visit but I usually go to the same places mostly now and am not so exploring as before.

But why did you stop this? After becoming mom I can't find time for exploring but I would do it if I had chance))

The same, logistics with kids is not so easy and I don't want to drag them around a city too often :)

😅 yeah, I still have memories of my daughter who when she saw water would just run into it and keeping an eye on her in Venice was not a pleasure!

Hi Steve , thank you for sharing your photos and story about Berlin , I didn't climb the Siegessäule freight of heights doesn't help 😁

I've only visited Berlin once , work related didn't really had the time to enjoy it all . we were put on a bus and driven around for sight seeing , i prefer to explore in my own pace . But maybe we will return one day .

🙂 I feel you there with the heights, I just climbed a scaffolding yesterday around 8 metres and was not feeling so good myself! The Siegessäule is worth climbing though for the great views of the Tiergartens and Brandenburg Tor. I hope you go back someday for more sightseeing, there are lots of good places for photos.

Very nice! I would have to say that my impression of Berlin was stuck back in the 80's with all of the wall stuff. This seems much better! It is great to see that they have recovered from those times. Someone the name Tiesto sounds familiar to me. Perhaps you have shared that in TTT before?

I haven't shared him on #ttt, im not really a fan, but it was a great night, we stayed up all night, my photos of the set are a bit blurry and the videos in 3GP format, so not much use these days. Part of the set is on youtube though:

It must have been someone else then. I know I have heard the name before.

yeah, he is/was a big DJ I think. His sets and music sounds all very samey. I did share the german DJ Paul Kalkbrenner who starred in a film made in Berlin. He has made some really great tunes.

I was thinking to do a #ttt post about the Boiler Room phenomenom.. with a few selections.

Honestly, I think a lot of the EDM stuff sounds the same. I enjoy it, but I've never really dug into it enough to hear the differences.
