Doing Some Medical Tourism

MT.jpg

This week I have been traveling away visiting family and when I go, I like to try and take advantage of the different health services for some medical tourism.

Some of my favorite activities include stocking up on cheap or stronger medicines when I go. Here in Germany, healthcare costs are sky high and the medicines are also very pricey. They even have a saying here called chemist prices if you are being ripped off.

Sometimes in the chemist when I am stocking up abroad, they are asking why I need so many paracetamol or other tablets, but it is just that I am buying a years supply.

Usually, Big Pharma have different pricing models for different countries, so there can be some big savings to be had. Especially here in Germany with their sky high prices for even basic over-the-counter medicines.

Visiting specialists is also another thing that can be worth to do. Getting your eyes checked and some new specs can save you enough to cover the cost of your trip even sometimes.

I also like to go abroad for my dental treatment. Although I can get some free checkups here, I try to avoid it due to the many horror stories I have been told by rogue dentists in Germany. Therefore, I prefer to pay and see a dentist that is not likely to go rogue and try and cause havoc in my mouth. Luckily, there are many good options when traveling abroad.

Sometimes you need to be careful about the language when you rock up to the dentist and ask for an appointment. Preferrably, it can make sense to bring someone along who can speak the local lingo, especially if the dentist is not a typical medical tourist establishment. This is usually a good sign so you will not pay extra fees too.

Today I went for a dental checkup abroad, here they had a nice flower at the entrance.

photo1690405727 (2).jpeg

At the reception they had some trendy chairs and plants. I didn't take a photo of the receptionist as I couldn't do it inconspicuously.

photo1690405727 (1).jpeg

I was then waiting directly for my appointment. Luckily I have usually gone directly in which is good as I don't like to wait if I can help it.

photo1690405727.jpeg

Handily, they also had some toilets available to use if you needed.

photo1690405446.jpeg

Usually the staff are very friendly and work very well. I try to say a few words in the local language if I can like hello , goodbye and thank you. This I hope helps me blend in to the locality. Other times I just nod as though I have understood them.

Overall, I can certainly recommend to try and shop around for your health care abroad as it can save you some money and you can get a much better service.

Do you go abroad for medical treatment?

We buy some medicine that my wife needs regularly in the Netherlands but not all. I never thought of going to a dentist abroad. Sure, some dentists can be rough but you have to look for a good one like you do with all docs.
Your photo on the chair is funny. 😃 Show your teeth! 😁

I agree with you that we should do our regular check up about our health, but i don't prefer to go to dentist because i think if once i checked my teeth to them, they'll call me again and again and other reason is that i feel little scared from dentist 🥶

Yeah I too am worried that they will find some extra work to do. It is not fun to visit the dentist.

Seems it was left out of the frame where exactly did you go abroad, uh? curious.

The health care system in my country is still not bad (or rather lets say: it is sufficient and strong), but authorities actively work on this problem since 2000-es (as well as on secondary and higher education)... and there is a significant success: it is spoiled, ruined, downgraded, compromised... but still useful and, most importantly,-- cheap.

My friend (who is also active on this blockchain), she lives at Cyprus, but use to fly back to Russia for her body' treatment...

I also had some shocking reading about medicine in the UK - it's terrible! total darkness without a single gap :( doctors recommend patients to take paracetamol, and wait for weeks - either the patient will die (and thus theres no problem and nothing needs to be done) or the body again will turn out stronger than the disease and again the doctors do not need to do anything. Fu..k it, our time is out of joint 😥

I was just visiting Poland next door to us and even though it has reminants of the communist system before it, it also seems to work quite well. Prices have gone up for private care in the last couple of years though, but I guess that is the same everywhere.

The UK healthcare system is very bad if you are sick, although I haven't used it for some time, I would not recommend it either!

I think for healthcare, natural medicine is the way to go anyway and try to avoid modern medicine and their tests as much as possible.

Natural medicine means caring of your body and running healthy way of life... than curing the multiple diseases you have got, after you've got them... ehehe !LOLZ well, at least in most part. Ofc you cant heal everything with herbs.... 🤔

Yes, agree. I haven't found herbs to be such a great cure of things, although they can bring good relief sometimes.

yeah I guess it depends if where you go costs more or less. I was traveling anyway so it can save money.

Here in the U.S. people complain about the high cost of medical care all the time. However, dental care (and dental insurance) is much cheaper. Also, things like acetaminophen (the same thing as paracetamol I believe) and ibuprofen can be had dirt cheap over the counter at any grocery store.

I guess you have more market forces in this area than the others, that is good to know! Here we have many countries nearby do can check easier, but lots of socialised health services that usually are not so good or privatised that just try to rob you as much as possible..

People from Slovenia goes to Croatia for more complex dental operations because there's cheaper up to 30% and the quality is the same.

That makes sense for sure. I was visiting the doctor and buying medicine in Croatia in the past too 😅

Many people in the US go to México for medical work, as it is far cheaper. It's quite a thing, apparently. 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

You look great at the dental checkup))
I have heard several times that people from abroad have received dental treatment in our country. Medicine prices aren't expensive here, but they are becoming more expensive day by day.

Thanks, it was a fun photo to make. I am often using my vacation time to catch up on visiting Drs and Dentists :)

I think everywhere the prices are going up like crazy. It is not making so much sense somehow.

I worked in a pharmaceutical warehouse and learned something about the huge price differences of the same medicine in different countries. It's impressive.

The only health tourism I have practiced has been to buy in the Principality of Andorra some analgesic creams that came out at half the price compared to the one here. One year I wanted to take the opportunity to change my glasses but I didn't have time on the days we had.

I wouldn't dare anything more important. Even the dentist would be afraid to do it outside my country.

In Spain, the public health system was very good, but since the pandemic, waiting times have been horrible. Up to two or three weeks for a phone appointment.

Yes that is true there are some big price discrepancies.

I have heard the health care is very good in Spain, but luckily did not need to use it very much when on holidays :)

I hope the waiting times will improve.

Apothekerpreise, huh? Hahaha - too funny.

Lol.

Wow I didn't even know that there is such a term called "Medical Tourism" 😲

Sorry to hear that the healthcare services provided in Germany is not really for all since I assume that the high prices would kind of "discriminate" against those of lower income 😢

I always thought that seeking medical treatment, regardless of any form of treatment, would be more expensive than what you can get locally since there will be subsidies from the Government.

0
0
0.000
avatar

Yes it is quite often done and there are known countries and areas that specialise in different treatments because certain countries are either very expensive or the subsidised care has long waiting lists or the service is of very low quality.

In Germany, the healthcare is generally good and affordable for many, but finding specialists who take you is not always easy.

This post is definitely an eye opener for me!
As much as possible, healthcare should really be assessable for all 😔
Thanks for sharing 😊

Hello, Im from Turkey and medical tourism is very popular in Turkey, you can see new hair-transplanted Arabs everywhere :D people from all around the world come here nonstop for their teeth, nose and other plastic surgeries, some American content creators made videos about tickets+surgery+1 week vacation much cheaper than just the surgery price in their own country :)

Luckily we dont have to pay for medicines/treatment here in the UK. The health service here is great - although it does have its problems, and its usually only that that gets reported in the news, never the good stuff.
When we were coming back from Istanbul I saw a lot of guys (like about 8 or so) in the airport who had clearly been there for hair transplants, and I understand its quite big business as it costs a lot less over there compared to here in the UK. Medical tourism is definitely on the rise.
