This is my post for #freeewriters Wednesday prompt my greatest enemy hosted by @daily.prompt

I went to my cousin's house today to collect mangos, some of his trees are loaded, he said he picks up a 5 gallon bucket a day. The above picture is of a Tommy Atkins mango tree. He told me they are expensive in the stores, I imagine they cost more because of the color of the skin, which you do not eat. I have not tried one yet but I think they will taste just like a mango. It did not have as many mangos as the Hadens or other kinds that he has.

We filled a fish basket almost to the top, we guessed we had over 55 pounds of mangos. To tell if they are ready to pick, you tilt a mango up and if it snaps from the limb, it is ready. If it does not break off, leave it be.

My cousin lives on the same land that our grandparents settled on in the late 1890s. My maiden name is Thompson and this road was named for my family. My Dad was born here in 1922 but they tore the house he was born in down.

This is a little pond that is on his property.

In the plant world, there are not many that I hate with a capital H, these heart shaped leaves are called potato plants, the part under the ground looks just like a potato. It will cover everything and eventually kill the plant that it overtakes. Right now it is * my greatest enemy*. It is in my backyard and quickly taking over.

My husband decided to leave the crab traps in the river, but instead of freezing them whole for our bait traps, he clubbed them to clean and freeze.

image.png
He cleaned out the guts and devil's fingers and threw away the top shell. After washing them, he will put them in ziploc bags and freeze them. This way we can eat them and if needed, we can still use them for our traps.

Photos are mine

It's nice you have more than one potential use for the crabs!

We would save more like this but we can get crabs fresh when we want them. You know that feeling you get when you say, I shouldn't have said that? I just had it. Let me rephrase, we can always try to get more crabs so we can eat fresh ones.

You are right about Tommy Atkins mangoes ... they look like Christmas, but are fibrous and have a hint of pine resin about them ... the Hadens are probably better...

I am waiting on them to get ripe, I might like them because I love turpentine mangoes, but some people say they do not like them because they are so stringy, but if you slice them from the big end to the small end, they are not stringy. To me, they have flavor whereas Hadens are more bland.

Word up -- the big end from the small end -- THANK YOU. I kind of like the turpentine bit without the stringiness ... I like things like pine needle tea, so, that tip could help me get more from Tommy Atkins!

Hadens are more bland ... but smooth ... I put milder mangos with lime juice to help them out... but make sure the lime is RIPE...

Thank you for the tip about lime juice, will lemon work? You would cut the mango just like it hangs on the tree, peel it, and start cutting on the stem end toward the small end, if they are too big for one bite, I make a slice in the middle. I peel in this direction, too.
