This is my post for #freewriters Sunday prompt Oh yes, I’m the killer! hosted by @daily.prompt

My husband used to hunt to put food on the table, I have never heard him say Oh yes, I’m the killer!, he would never brag about killing an animal. In all of the years that we have been together, I know of one hog that he shot that did not drop where it was standing. It is the one in this picture.

He shot it a couple of hours before dark. There were two of them standing together and when he shot, it hit both, one dropped and the other took off, he knew he hit it, too. He looked for it well into the night. I do not think I have ever seen him so upset. He could not sleep all night.

He was up at daylight and got our dogs and our son to go look for it. He found it laying in a patch of palmettos, it was bleeding but not dead. He quickly finished it to put it out of its suffering. Out of all of the animals he has hunted, this one haunts him. It was the last hog that he shot. He no longer cares to hunt. I don't think it is because of what happened but getting older he just does not care about hunting like he used to.

One factor could be we no longer have 7 people to feed and with just the two of us we can afford to buy meat. I have never cared about hunting. He took me one time and I shot but missed, I never cared to try again, it is not my thing. It did not bother me that I missed, I do not care to kill an animal, but if I was starving I would try again.

I know I couldn't kill most animals, but I've been going out to my garden in a murderous mood these days, to murder japanese beetles. If an animal is threatening my food source, I might try to kill it, such as a ground hog. But to be a source of food for me? I'd rather not eat meat.

I am just the opposite, I have rabbits and squirrels that eat my garden and fruit from my trees, I try to feed them with extra stuff that I have. Today I dumped a bunch of mangos for the squirrels and I put kale leaves or such on the ground for the rabbits, but to have food on the table to feed my kids, I have no problem. If I needed food, I would kill the rabbits and squirrels.

When hunting is haunting - what a great story, with photos too!
This is one reason I've promoted entomophagy for years now - why do people eat cute, furry mammals who can make eye contact with us and even become pets (pigs!), yet cringe in horror at eating insects? Why isn't the horror over eating sheep, cows, pigs, beautiful birds (pheasants) and chickens (@owasco I haven't seen chicken stories from you since your move - no more urban chickens?).
That said, I rarely eat insects: mealworms cost $20 a pound if you can even find them.
We already ingest so many pounds a year of bugs and larvae - the USDA allows a percentage of them, and as long as they're invisible, we have no difficulty consuming them.
I've seen dog foods made with crickets, but always more expensive than made with meat scraps.

Japanese beetles: WAGE THE WAR!!

Knocking them into buckets of soapy water, I found, is the best way. Those traps with bait just attract millions of 'em from miles around.

If my family were starving, I might be able to hunt and kill bunnies and chickens, but for now, it's ever so much easier to allow the meat packing plants to do the dirty work, and we pay for those packaged cuts of meat without ever having to look the source in the eye.... no, I'm not vegan... with all my food allergies, especially the gluten-dairy-egg, meat is one of the few "safe" things I can eat. -_-

Oh my goodness I am just about to publish a post about japanese beetles and containers with soap! I'm waiting to publish it for another hour or so, to increase, hopefully, my measly rewards.

I do have chickens again, but they are at a friend's house. My yard is just too small, although I'm thinking about getting a few anyway. If I could only get three, no problem, but there's a minimum of six sold here (more law makers getting all up in my business trying to protect chickens), and I don't have enough space for six to be happy in.
