For 30 years my Mother cared for people who were at the end of their lives,
from either Alzheimer's or Cancer. When she had a car accident and could not care for them, I went to her house every day and cared for the people and one of my other sisters would go and stay the night caring for them.

One of her patients was a man called Jerimiah Holmes, his wife had passed and they had no children. He was my favorite, a very kind man. He never had any family to visit him and when he passed Mom gave me what belongings he left at her home. This letter was in his things.

This letter was written by Jere's wife who moved to Panama to be with her husband. Jere was an engineer who worked for our Government and the letter is the denial of what the newspapers were reporting to us, the citizens of America.

I can not imagine the fear she was going through, to be in a different country during an uprising against Americans.

image.png
I wish I had an article from one of our newspapers, they called this the Flag Incident. I asked "Alexa" and it said the flag incident took place in 1963 in Panama.

I am used to our media spinning things, so this does not surprise me.

It has taken me 5 minutes to get this far but I have 5 more pages to go.

I hope you are interested in reading about it, I would not call it entertaining but it is informative and a part of history.

I wish I had known about this letter while I was caring for him, maybe he could have recalled it for me.

Jere was a tall man with white hair, when he spoke, he had a soft tone to his voice, one that you could listen to all day. A true pleasure to listen to.
image.png
Jere could not remember what happened yesterday but could tell stories from his childhood as if he was reliving it as he told it to me. He lived on a farm and cared for the cows.

image.png
One day I was bathing him, down there, and he looked up at me and said, "It ain't what it used to be". I almost fell over but held it together and told him I was sure it was fine. I did not know what to say, but we both had a good laugh and when I told my Mom about it, she also had a good laugh.

This is Jere's wife, Mary, she is the one who wrote about her experiences during the flag incident.
