This is my post for #freewriters 2309 prompt go practice hosted by @mariannewest

I fished 3 days in September and 1 day in November and have not been back.
I am used to coming home from fishing in pain but the pain has been getting worse, the last time I fished, I came home in tears from my back and my hand hurting. I did not go to the fish house to weigh up. I went home and laid on the heating pad until the pain eased enough to drive to the fish house.

When I fish pompano I use six rods and I run from one end of the boat to the other checking baits, and when a fish gets on one, I go in a circle around the boat, having to go over or under the other lines, lifting the other rods out of the way, it is a lot on my back.

I am thinking I will try to trout fish, I only use one pole for catching trout. I might need to go practice with it before putting all of the crab traps and pigfish traps in the river.

If I can not trout fish, it would mean my 40 year fishing career is over unless I can find something else to do on the river, but I do not know what that would be with the shape the river is in.

If I can not fish with a pole, maybe I can sell bait to the sports leaving the docks in the mornings. I think I would be doing this just for something to do because I can not see making enough money to pay the bills from it.

My hope is this long rest that I have had will do my back and hand some good and I will not hurt so much. I do not want to give up fishing, it has always been in my heart to fish since I was a little girl. People used to say, how can she sit there all day fishing. I had what I called my rock at the inlet, it had an indent on top of it just big enough for my rear to fit, this was my favorite place to fish.

I'll keep my fingers crossed your hand and back will be good enough to fish again. It does sound like heavy work and your back will always remain the weak spot.
Could some bandage or 'hot pack' help?

I've been thinking about that if I'm longer at work. I started mowing with a grass'trimmer' again since the mower is broke.

P.s. Could some gym/muscle training help to strengthen other muscles to help your back?

🍀❤️

Thank you for the concern but it is torn discs, not muscle, they are torn from the inside to the outside, 3 of them in the lower back. When I overdo things the fluid leaks out onto the nerve, then the nerve hurts which makes the muscle swell around it more and the more the muscle swells the more it makes the nerve hurt. I do lay on a heating pad and that helps but I can not have it on the boat.

As for my hand, I have had 2 steroid injections, but they have only helped take a little of the pain away, it is arthritis.

I'm so sorry to hear that. It's a huge damage your back has. Somehow I hope there will be a solution or at least something that kills the worst pain.

Nerve pain is the worst.

A big hug for you.

Thank you @wakeupkitty.pal I have lived with it for many many years and now know my limits and what to do when I ignore them.
