This is my post for #freewriters 2239 prompt underline hosted by @mariannewest and @daily.prompt

I love having dogs but sometimes I hate having dogs. Like yesterday, I saw the granddaughter's dog hopping in the yard, she would stick her head down and then jump back. I walked over to see what was going on, I saw the baby rabbit. I quickly picked it up to keep the dog from harming it, and saw she had already killed its sibling.

Not sure what to do, I wrapped it in an old shirt and put it in a box. My husband was not home to ask what to do so I went to the next best thing, Google, which turned out was not the best idea.

I did not open any of the pages, I just read several brief descriptions on how to care for it. It said to feed it 1/2 teaspoon of formula or goat's milk, one site said to use milk from the Vet for kittens. With all the sites saying the same thing, I thought I knew enough to care for it.

I did not have any formula, all I had was 2% milk. I put some in a cup and added a little water to it and warmed it. I recently saw an eye dropper in this house, but do you think I could find it, I will leave it at that. All I could find was the syringe that you use for turkey basting. I did not get much in him, but I did see him swallow some.

This morning my husband found a bottle from when he used to vape, and it worked, I warmed the milk and put 1/2 teaspoon in the bottle, I could squeeze the bottle and one drop of milk would form on the tip of it. I touch it to his mouth and he would suck it in and I could see him swallow. He drank almost the entire thing, I was so happy.

Now for the bad part. My husband got on the computer and read about caring for baby rabbits. He opened the pages and read everything. He tells me that you are not to give baby rabbits cows milk, it can kill them.

The underline story is he will probably not make it anyway. Everyone that I know who has tried to save one has lost it. This does not deter me, I am going tomorrow to a Vet and buy some milk made for kittens, I hope he makes it until I can get it for him. In the meantime I am giving it water, it has to have something or it will get dehydrated.

My husband put some different kinds of grass, some lettuce, and another type of green veggie I forgot what it was and I picked some young dandelion leaves. I do not think it has touched any of it. what we read was if the eyes are open and they can hop, they can eat hay. All he wants to do is stay hidden in his shirt. I do not know what will happen but I do know that I am trying my best to give him every chance to make it.

Dogs. (And cats, serial killers of songbirds.)
And cute baby bunnies.
My neighbor SHOOTS rabbits to protect the garden.
My own garden was decimated in 2023, by rabbits, mostly, possibly woodchucks too.
Nope, didn't set a trap and fire a bullet at any of 'em, and the dogs just sat there watching as the rabbits munched on my garden.
Meanwhile, my daughter was searching online for where to see bobcats in the wild in the Midwest.
Her search turned up this happy, hale and hearty HUNTER holding up his KILL -
A bobcat!
And he was thrilled to have added this to his Bucket List.
And he looks vaguely like my son, and he is very much the handsome Viking outdoorsman and hunter, AND he's a farm boy (who played college football) and he trains hunting dogs and works as a guide for weekend duck hunting expeditions....
Me: "Here is my future son in law."

Daughter: "MURDERER!" I will have nothing to do with him! (Except to chastise him online).
I'm reminded of one of my favorite memes:

Um...
yes....
I keep mentioning Mennonites and deer-slayers to my unwed nieces (and daughter). 🙂
When the apocalypse hits (some say 2024!), the Amish and Mennonites and the outdoorsmen like this bobcat slayer will be the hardiest survivors.

Recently at a farm auction I spotted two very striking young men, lean and sharp looking and well dressed with their black hats, clean shaven (my mom said that means unmarried). Turns out they're Mennonite, from a community only half an hour from my mom, but who knew?

I keep wondering if my town-raised daughter will ever understand my preoccupation with homesteading and manly men.

The kind with apocalyptic warlord potential.

(Yes. I know. Mennonites are peaceful, not warlords.)
