Parents and Students trek miles away to Offices and Schools Respectively; The response of Nigerians to Hike in Petrol Price

It's been 88 days since Nigeria had a change of power when it comes to a change in president. The number one citizen of Nigeria as a nation, by the name of His Excellency Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has made 80% of the citizens bemoan his harsh decision on the country, which accounts for fuel subsidy removal, which has caused a serious uproar and much disorganization in the country as the citizens cry for help in different areas and sectors.

Fuel subsidy removal has affected every aspect of the economy and the citizens at large in a negative way in that the removal of the subsidy has led to a massive increase in the price of transportation for both humans and goods and services. Fuel is one commodity in Nigeria that, when the price hikes, affects other aspects of the economy, seeing that through it, things are transported to reach the common man. The common man, on the other hand, finds it difficult to survive, seeing that it is now difficult to purchase the normal and daily needs needed for day-to-day survival.

The withdrawal of the fuel subsidy, according to Simeon Adekilekun, 46, who spoke to Within Nigeria, has forced him to change his schedules and increased his monthly transportation costs. The last two months have been tough for Adekilekun’s family to survive, he claimed in an interview with this reporter, because more than half of his pay would be used on transportation. The civil servant, who was born in Ilesa, went on to say that he is already thinking about moving his family to Osun Jela or another nearby hamlet in order to save money on transportation source.

The removal of fuel subsidies has caused a big issue, as the interview that was conducted, as seen in the above paragraph, highlighted just a part of it. Taking, for example, a farmer that engages in a bit of commercial farming where some of the products from the farm are for export, imagine what this hike in fuel prices could have caused in the maintenance of the machines used in cultivating the crops, the buying of chemicals to be spread on farmland, the increase in the buying of fertilizers, and most of the other necessary needs a farmland needs to boost its performance. If the price of this hikes due to an increase in the sale of fuel and the farmer manages to buy it and eventually the farm turns out to yield to the required extent, what effect do you think this will have on the consumers? The common man who manages to eat will have a big issue with catering to his needs and those of his family.

The issue is not just that there is a hike in fuel prices due to the removal of fuel subsidies but rather the fact that the channeling of the money to the right source so that there would be ease of life is not there and is nowhere to be found. The promise of sharing palliative care still remains a story, as even since a certain amount of money has been allocated to help during these hard times, nothing has happened as the consideration of ways to survive has been the earnest need and demand of the citizens.

The effect of the removal of fuel subsidies is now affecting the less fortunate and the common man more, as both young and old are finding it difficult to survive and live a normal life. Those working in offices are now forced to trek their way, both going and coming to offices. Students have now made trekking a normal thing as they try to save money to eat and balance the normal daily dues.

What do you think would be the fate of the citizens survival if the subsidy stayed and wasn't returned?

Thanks for stopping by, friends; do have a nice day.
