Some germinating rice in progress and more work on the farm

Hello Hive.

The planting of our rice is done in batches and the first set of planted rice have germinated so beautifully.
We have rice in nursery for transplanting when the farms become waterlogged but in the mean time we plant and watch the growing seedlings against birds.
Even at this stage birds can still pick up the grains from underneath to eat then.
Regardless of the human mould we make in farms with sticks, they are to wise to fear that.
Most times the birds are active in the mornings and evenings.
We visit the farms in those hours to keep them away.

This location is more of an upland than a low one that gets water logged easily, it is more of sand than loamy soil but our rice can thrive well here.

The other of our farms contain both sand loan and clay soil, this makes its water retention capacity higher. Thank goodness we have different species of rice now. Some that can thrive waterlogged and others that can do well done without much water.

This is good so far and we have been able to keep away birds.

We did a mixed cropping on this farm and I guess you can see corn as well. Before the rice grows to a certain level we would have harvested the corn.
The corn is harvested and eating fresh, this is just the first maize. Subsequent ones for making corn flower is planted as late maize.

This is beautiful I must admit.

Corn takes about three months and rice harvesting could start as early as four months with a second batch at six months. The height of the corn would be a shade for the rice and protection from birds.

You may consider netting the corn also to prevent birds from accessing the rice and also, a form of demarcation from encroachment

Wow, thanks alot.
I will work on the demarcation since this is even close to a walk way.
Thank you so much.
