My Best purchase for the day

Hello Hive

You all have got that one equipment you use to cook at home.
Is it a gas stove, A charcoal stove or just an ordinary open space where we join stones to cook with firewood.
I needed something I can use to be cooking at home and making a choice or deciding what will convenient and economical made me go out to town in search recently, my shopping wasn't done today but I had kept a record to ask the community about what methods they use to cook their meals.

Let's start with the better one.
A gas stove here cost 12k naira /$15HBD for 3kg of gas, living alone means that this size of gas tank is okay for my personal use.
Since I do not cook everyday refilling this for 2100naira/3HBD per month is okay to cook my meals. I spend roughly 45HBD for s year for a fast and easy way of cooking.

After leaving the gas store, I visited the charcoal stove selling store here. For economic reasons a large percentage of people here use charcoal and if they purchase the gas I mentioned above, they often do not forget to complement it with a charcoal pot here. The charcoal pot cost 6knaira /$7.6HBD which is a lesser amount compared to the gas tank above.

The reason is not far fetched, charcoal is an easy buy here. The highest it has ever gone in price is 2500naira/ $3.17 HBD.
This bag can last me for two months, a two times more functional value compared to gasoline.

The downside to cooking with this is that it is very slow. After serious effort to set the coal on fire you might still have to fan this where is no enough air especially in raining seasons where charcoal do not get dried after production.
It is stressful and time consuming to cook with this.

Next I thought about an electric cooker called a hot plate here.

This is sold for 12-15k naira $15-19HBD which is about the same price with the cooking gas tank above.

For this I will have to pay for electricity bills in huge amount because I have heard from neighbors who use this about how this is power consuming. It might be fast but cannot be compared with a gas tank
Gas seem to remain the fasted cooking device so far.
And another drawback is that I am careless with electric appliances and often do not like to work with them to avoid shock or accidents.

My last bet is the charcoal stove.

This is the most recent bet in town. The charcoal stove cost 10k naira/$12.7HBD.

It has been designed to create an efficient burning method for charcoal hence it cooks food faster than the charcoal stove above.
Which means that I can buy cheap charcoal to save some finance from buying expensive gas while it also cooks my meal at a more faster rate.

The store owner has exhausted this particular pot and the last one ground here belong to someone else already. Since the pots are not manufactured here an order has to be made to request for my own copy of the stove.

Can there be any draw back to this.
Maybe none, but it cannot cook as fast as the gas tank which means that I have to set aside some extra time for cooking each time I want to use this.

Nevertheless I also purchased the cooking gas for 12k naira/15HBD, I really wanted to keep this and also get the charcoal pot. Both will be functional and if I am in a hurry I could make use of the gas and on other days when I have the luxury of time, the charcoal stove will be my best use.

What I have is electric, they are known to be inefficient with electricity but I don't know how much of my bill is from cooking. We are not allowed charcoal anything in my apartment building based on the fire code. We're allowed to have gas but I don't have one.

Hope that doesn't take much of your time. We cook a bit of really heavy food here some might not even get cooked on that electric gas.

It doesn't take too long generally. It is an old fashioned kind of electric, because here the landlord is generally expected to provide a stove/oven and refrigerator, so we joke and call it "the landlord special" because they will buy whatever is cheapest, not what is more efficient for use, lol. My old fridge in the previous apartment was 40 years old and worked better than the new one in this apartment. 😂
Anyway, there are the new style electric stoves that are all flat instead of coils, and they are supposed to be more efficient. A lot of tiny house people use them because they are small and easy to store.
I tried to upload a picture to show you what I mean, but I got an error code!

Landlord special 😂 that's good at least one will not bear the bulk of carrying personal fridge all around.

I can't believe that a fridge can cast up to that long and still be working.
I have seen some of the flat ones around, the ones made of coils are quickly going into extinction here.

Right! The old fridge was original to when the building was built in the 80s. The old stove was, too. I wonder if the old fridge had the banned CFCs in it and they had to specially dispose of it safely for the ozone?

Maybe they shouldn't dispose yet. If it is useful and working well.

That's how I feel but they forced me to switch apartments because I was one of the last three to not be remodeled yet on the building, and they wanted to remodel all apartments so they could charge higher rent. 😮‍💨

That happens alot here too. They remodel houses and increase the rent. It is a business for them

Since I bought the charcoal stove for my family over a year, they've been enjoying it with the charcoal I purchase occasionally when I travel to rural areas which is usually cheaper than those in town.

Congratulations on your new buy

Hello Monica. This looks like a very smart purchase indeed :) I think striking a perfect balance between the different ways of cooking and their respective times is very important and it's nice to have both options for different situations. Soon we hope to see what recipes you can prepare in that pot, I had never seen it before. Thanks for sharing ❤️.
