August is greeting us with a heavy downpour, the rains have been heavy all through the night and has continued up until now.
In as much as farming activities requires abundant rainfall, excessive rain is also a hindrance to proper growth of crops.

It has been forecasted that there will be flooding across different areas of the country and even this state in particular. We are seeing the signs of these already.

A portion of our rice is long overdue in the nursery and needs to be transplanted but the farms are excessively filled with water such that no work can be done here.

Here a portion of the transplanted rice got submerged and has rot away.
Seedlings transplanted must be taller than the water level unless we risk losing them.

Different kind of losses is associated with farming activities.
And with rice farming you can also experience rodent attack.

While flooding is ruining rice in the field, we are also guarding against rodent attack on the rice in nursery.

Right in between the nursery looking thick like a forest, rats prefer to build their homes using the seedling as a folder. So for this season we are watching out against rodent attract on the seedlings while it is still challenging for us transplant rice since the fields are covered in water.

Within these week rice grains has become more expensive in the market.
The price for a bag of rice moved from 35,000 naira to 40,000 and the 7tin measure of rice usually sold for 1100 naira is now 1450, the recent hike in price is not far fetched.

Each time there is a flooding and heavy downpour like this, production of rice experiences flooding, market people and farmers capitalize on this to increase the price of the existing product.

The heavy downpour also affects rice been imported or transported from one state to another.
We are hearing of recent submerge lorry/truck conveying this products.

If flooding affects importation and the growth of the rice in the field, there is always a corresponding hike in price.

Getting a daily meal keeps getting challenging everyday as rice is one of the majorly consumed food in the country.
