Beautiful Views on the Island of Holbox, Quintana Roo, Mexico

We spent 5 days on Holbox last December. Some people only go there for a day trip or maybe a day or two, but I decided to make it a longer trip. The island is small enough to see in a few days, but if you really want to get the feel of the place, I suggest a longer stay. Like we did, and I'm glad we did.

The Harbour of Holbox

According to the tour guides on the island, the best time to visit is late spring to summer, because that's when the whale sharks are in the area and the bioluminescence, which the island is so famous for, is much more present and can be seen better because the water is warmer. We did do the bioluminescence tour this time around, but we'll have to come back in the summer to swim with whale sharks and see the bioluminescence better. Nevertheless, we had a small glimpse of what it may look like.

The 'guide' came to pick us up from our hotel in an ATV, and the trip to one of the darkest beaches on the island was around 20 minutes. It's a bumpy ride, and since it's in the evening when it's dark, mosquitoes can be a nuisance. We were lucky because it was quite windy, so no bugs for us this time. We walked up to the beach, and the guide took a black t-shirt and held it underwater.
This way you can see the tiny little organisms that form the bioluminescence and light up when stirred up. It's amazing to see so I can't wait to come back in the summer.
And of course for the whale sharks, which has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember.

I didn't take any pictures of the tour that night, nor was it possible, because in the winter, you can only really see the little creatures when you stir the water, unlike in the summer, when they're much more visible.

But I will share some photos of our trip to Holbox.

Don't ask me what kind of bird this is, as I have no idea. They seem to be a small kind of seagull or similar

The beaches of Holbox are just stunning. Because the weather wasn't going along with our trip, the water was not as bright blue/green as it usually would be, and a bit murky, but beautiful nevertheless.

And a picture up close of our little friends

There are many different kinds of animals on the island, and Holbox is known for being a favorite spot for birdwatchers. We're not birdwatchers but we do enjoy the birds here in Mexico. There's so many of them, and birds always make me happy. Even those that leave their not-so-nice traces behind in our yard...I still love them.

And a different angle haha

He was definitely hunting something. There's plenty of little fish in the area.

A crane or heron bird with a smaller bird trying to 'hunt' a coconut. He was really going at it.

When there's rain, you can bet on seeing a rainbow not long after.

We saw many horseshoe crabs on the beach. Most of them were dead, unfortunately, but this guy was still moving towards the water. They're alien looking things, aren't they? The shell was staged and about the size of my hand, so you can see how large the crab was.

The weather and clouds did make for some dramatic views. It's beautiful either way. And we didn't mind the weather one bit.

Holbox Sunsets

Aside from its Whale sharks, bioluminescence, and birds, Holbox is also known for its sunsets.
They are nothing short of spectacular and many people gather at the beach to witness it every evening. It's not visible in these pictures, but closer to the beach bar, there were a few hundred people to enjoy a drink and watch the sunset.

I could just stay here forever, without ever being bored.

I hope you liked my photos. I didn't take as many as I usually would elsewhere, because I was trying to actually enjoy the place. But there is still plenty to show in other posts, so stay tuned for more images of Holbox.
