The Future of Care: Robots for the Elderly

Technology is becoming more and more advanced, and this can be of great help to humanity in many ways. We can see industries producing more at a lower cost and, consequently, we can have cheaper products because of this automation. Robots automate services, are more efficient and help us save time, even on a smaller scale.

Here in my house, I have a robot that cleans the floor. When I leave the house, I leave it running, doing its job, and when I arrive, the house is clean. Imagine how much time it saves me with a very simple task, an activity that I would waste time on every day and no longer do. It reminds me a lot of old cartoons like "The Jatsons", where a robot did the housework.

Well, if I could create a robot for a specific activity, it would be caring for the elderly. There is a serious problem when we reach old age; the younger members of the family have many commitments, work or are even starting their own families, and parents or grandparents are no longer priorities. They need care because they have reached a time in their lives when they are frail, weak and lonely. This robot could alleviate the loneliness and lack of care that many elderly people face.

If the elderly person lives in a house alone or even spends most of their time unaccompanied, the robot could carry out domestic tasks that help them to have a better quality of life, but above all it would be attentive to vital signs, making a periodic analysis of the resident's health. It could send alerts and information when necessary or requested, watch out for any unusual signs and even call the emergency services. It would be a lookout for any problems, perhaps even more efficient than a person.

This could probably help a lot in monitoring an elderly person's health, but one detail would be very important when creating this robot: I wouldn't create it to make the elderly person even lonelier. The family would be less concerned and perhaps less present. So here comes the most important point of this creation: interaction. With the implementation of artificial intelligence, the robot would be able to interact almost like a human with the elderly person, identifying their profile and preferences for a conversation.

In addition to the ability to interact, this robot should have a more human appearance to make things more natural. I believe that this would make the lives of older people more fun and human, while also improving their mental health, since loneliness must be one of the worst things to face at this age. I've heard of cases where elderly people are completely abandoned, and it must really hurt to see the people you love, cared for and helped raise turn their backs on you. I really believe that this invention would bring more happiness into their lives.

Perhaps this is a bit too big an idea, but we may be very close to being able to create solutions to problems like the one I've described. That would be a very big step towards humanizing using robots, even if it seems contradictory. So I really believe that this would be of great value to humanity. I hope it's invented before I become an old man.

Se o idoso morasse em uma casa sozinho ou mesmo passasse a maior parte do tempo sem companhia, o robô poderia executar tarefas domésticas que o ajudassem a ter uma melhor qualidade de vida, mas principalmente ele estaria atento a sinais vitais, fazendo uma análise periódica de como está a saúde do morador. Ele poderia enviar alertas e informações quando necessário ou solicitado, ficar atento a quaisquer sinais fora do padrão e até mesmo ligar para a emergência. Seria um vigia atento a qualquer problema, talvez até mais eficiente que uma pessoa.

Provavelmente, isso poderia ajudar muito na observação da saúde de um idoso, mas um detalhe seria muito importante na criação desse robô: eu não o criaria para deixar o idoso ainda mais solitário. A família iria ficar menos preocupada e talvez menos presente. Então, aqui entra o ponto mais importante dessa criação: a interação. Com a implementação de uma inteligência artificial, o robô seria capaz de interagir quase como um humano com o idoso, identificando o seu perfil e preferências para uma conversa.

Além da capacidade de interação, esse robô deveria ter uma aparência mais humana para tornar as coisas mais naturais. Acredito que isso iria tornar a vida das pessoas mais velhas mais divertida e humana, melhorando também sua saúde mental, já que a solidão deve ser uma das piores coisas a serem enfrentadas nessa idade. Já ouvi casos em que idosos são completamente abandonados, e deve doer muito ver as pessoas que você ama, cuidou e ajudou a criar virarem as costas. Acredito muito que essa invenção traria mais felicidade para suas vidas.

Talvez essa seja uma ideia um pouco grande demais, mas talvez estejamos muito perto de conseguir criar soluções para problemas como esse que descrevi. Isso seria um passo muito grande na direção de humanizar utilizando robôs, mesmo que isso pareça contraditório. Então, eu acredito muito que isso seria de grande valor para a humanidade. Espero que isso seja inventado antes de eu me tornar um idoso.
